I don’t typically write reviews but after such an awful experience and trying to reach out to management direct via email with no response I wanted to share this with other so they can choose to support a better business.
I honestly am still having a hard time processing what happened given how bizarre the interaction was. We came by the cafe on Saturday September 10th just before 4. We were not greeted initially by the server who just glanced up at us but after waiting for several minutes he eventually came by to take our order. He was not very helpful when asking about the beer options, but this was the least offensive part of our interaction. At this point it was 4:00 exactly so we asked if it was possible to still order brunch. The server said it’s 4 you will have to ask the kitchen, laughed and then walked away. While I would have expected him to ask the kitchen on our behalf as the server, given he didn’t, as directed, we walked over to the kitchen and asked if it was still possible to order brunch. The two women in the kitchen were lovely and very pleasant and advised they would be happy to still make us eggs and that they just couldn’t do egg’s Benedict due to having run out of Hollandaise sauce which was totally reasonable. We then went back to our table and when the server walked by again we informed him we had talked to the kitchen and that they kindly agreed to still make us a brunch order. At this point the server became irate, told us our behavior was unbelievable and that he couldn’t believe we would speak to the kitchen, that things didn’t work like this around here and who did we think we were. Very confused at this point, we mentioned how it was him who said we would have to ask the kitchen he advised he was just joking about that and the fact we took him literally was shocking and we were completely out of line. At this point we mostly were confused by how angry he seemed to get from what seemed to be a simple misunderstanding. We stated we were confused and we simply did was we were told and it seemed like the kitchen was kind enough to assist so wasn’t sure now the huge issue or why he was so angry. At this point he referred to my friend as “a Karen”, then stated regardless of the kitchen’s flexibility he couldn’t get us brunch as the system would not allow him to take an order past 4pm (which should have been what was stated when we initially inquired if we could order brunch in the first place as it would have eliminated the entire misunderstanding and his subsequent rage). We then we told we were going to be asked to leave. Given what had just transpired we were more than happy to leave and support a neighbouring business and proceeded to do that where we had a lovely experience with the staff at Tacador.
I understand brunch hours exist and the fact we couldn’t be served was no issue, it was how we were treated by a server who is supposed to be in service and is the face of the business. I know customers can be awful and unreasonable (I have worked in customer service). I can assure you, that we were polite, reasonable and mostly just confused by what transpired. I can also confirm we didn’t walk into the kitchen or anything like that which could reasonably cause outrage and we just spoke the the kitchen staff though the window from the customer side of the cafe. I know people have bad days and maybe this was the case for this server, but that is no excuse to treat customers in the manner that he did. Calling a customer “a Karen” is not appropriate at anytime, particularly when the customer isn’t being rude, yelling or cursing, but calmly asking a question.
I would never go back to this awful establishment based ont his experience and was even disappointed after emailing the restaurant they couldn’t even...
Read moreI've visited Caffe Barney three times thus far, and maybe it has been four times. Regardless of my waning memory, I do recall my last two visits.
One evening my wife and I stopped in on a school night, and we had no problem finding a spare table. Service was prompt, as one would hope for when your party makes up a third of the restaurant's patrons.
Barney is keen on burgers so my wife chose the salmon burger, and I went for the crab and scallops burger. Both were prepared nicely and appeased our taste buds. I must say the buns used for their burgers are nearly a dessert, with a nice bit of sweetness, but not so much that it becomes unappetizing. To drink I went for a dark ale, athough the name has now slipped my mind, but it overcame my expectations as I do like a beer with some bitterness.
And I have revisited recently, lamely ordering the same burgers. Again, I had no trouble finding a seat even when it was buzzing with people this past Sunday.
I was craving a good caesar while shopping on Main Street, and Barney makes exceptional ones. I like my caesars particularly spicy and here they make them just shy of too spicy.
Some have had poor experiences here, but so far, in my last three times, I have yet to be a disgruntled customer. Or maybe it has...
Read moreWas craving a burger and yam fries. I live in the area (Main and Broadway), so I checked out what was available in the area. Caffe Barney showed up, so I promptly checked out their menu. Bam! They had this delicious sounding Home Burger with the option to get Yam Fries. And I must say, damnnnnn!! It was absolutely delicious! Fresh, house made patty with some great seasonings, fresh, crisp lettuce, juicy thick cut tomato (but not too thick), splash of house sauce topped with a very healthy pickle on a lightly toasted Brioche Bun. The Yam Fries are out of this world delicious! Perfectly cooked, crispy and tasty! I love Chipotle sauce so they gave me a second one on the house! Definitely would've paid for the extra sauce, but they went that extra mile to make me feel special as a customer.
Definitely will be back. If this is the standard of food at Caffe Barney, I 100% will make my way down the menu to...
