It's been a while since I've eaten here but I've always had good food no matter what I ordered. Took my sister her for the first time and she was very happy. Portion sizes are big and the price point is great.
Chicken Doria was creamy with perfect toastiness from the bake. It's very rich so it fills you up fast so don't let the size of the dish fool you.
Hayashi rice with hamburg steak was also on point. This is a dish that's too bothersome to make at home so it's always a treat to order it. Lovely deep flavour, perfect consistency to flavor both the hamburg steak and coat the rice.
Also ordered the croquettes - these were rice based rather than potato which is an instant plus for me. Crispy and satisfyingly crunchy exterior, while inside is creamy with just enough texture from the rice and veg to match the flavour.
For dessert we got the Zunda Dango Parfait. If you like Japaneae desserts, you'll like this one. The Zunda (sweet crushed edamame) gives a great texture on the tongue and when chewed - great for eating with the other more smooth and chewy parts of this dessert. The Dango and red bean compliment the other parts of this dessert, and there's just the right amount of ice cream. My only slight complaint (very small because it's still good) is that there was a bit too much black sugar syrup which made the overall dessert really sweet once you got to the bottom of the bowl. However I'm someone who prefers unsweetened things so likely this isn't an issue with most people
We did also order the curry poutine for someone at home and they enjoyed it very much. I didn't try it so no comment from me on the taste.
The staff there are down to earth and very lovely. Thoughtful as well. They make the experience very enjoyable so I tend to tip pretty well there.
The ambiance isn't the most stellar there but I'm going for the tasty food. It's a lot more crowded inside than I remember but since they're always bustling and busy it's probably for the better that they added more seats and tables.
Anyways if you're still on the fence, I'd say try it out. It's tucked away from the main traffic streets (nearest are Granville and W. 70th Ave) so it's quite quiet compared to its old location. There is a small parking lot outside but it can get full quickly so you may want to park further and walk over since it's near a nice park and makes for a pleasant stroll during the...
Read moreWe came on a weekday and the restaurant was already mostly full when we got there at around 12pm. We got the chicken karage, poutine with hayashi sauce, Masago de creamy pasta, wafu spaghetti and grapefruit cheesecake.
Ive been here quite a few times and their quality is always consistent. The flavours and everything have not changed over the years. They have the ultimate Japanese fusion comfort food.
It was actually the first time I ordered the chicken karage and unfortunately it was disappointing. It's not your usual chicken karage. The breading is very light and doesn't feel like it was fried at all. Unfortunately I like a heavier chicken karage. Needed to be a bite crispier
The poutine with Hayashi sauce is my go to must order everytime. No visit is complete without this. It seems like their portion for the poutine has gotten ever so slightly smaller. The chips are still very crispy and the sauce still meaty and heart but just felt a bit smaller than usual.
The Masago de creamy pasta is also another must order. Strangely enough it seems like their portions for the pastas have gotten bigger. Way more noodles than before. The Masago creamy pasta is very savoury and addicting. The Masago gives it that umami flavour. It leaves you wanting more. It's not overly creamy or heavy. The pasta is always cooked to perfection everytime.
It was our first time trying the wafu pasta and I gotta say the Masago pasta is still more delicious. The wafu just didn't have that wow factor for me. I thought the bonito would give it that same umaminess I got from the Masago but it didn't. I wouldn't order this again.
For dessert we finished off with the grapefruit cheesecake. We like most of their desserts as they are not overly sweet and they have a wide range of desserts. The grapefruit was refreshing. There was a jello later in it which gave it a nice contrast with the cream cheese layers. Not overly sweet. Would get again
Overall one of my favourite places to go for a relaxed meal with guaranteed good time. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Food is delicious and hearty plus they have a huge...
Read moreCame over here as the rating was pretty high. Its a small cafe with a comforting vibe. Inside plays soft jazz music. I noted when entered staff here appears to all be Japanese (いらっしゃいませ irasshaimase) was a little thrown off guard as I didnt expect this from a cafe.
Staff was warm and welcoming and seated up pretty fast. I started ordered two drinks.
shanghai fog (london fog with shanghai tea)
matcha latte (tasted creamy, and has a rich matcha flavour, appears to be imperial grade whisked matcha)
Then I ordered their famous spaghetti and a japanese comfort food.
The spaghetti was the Masako creamy pasta. This was really good. Pasta was cooked perfectly and the flavourful cream and squid really tops this off. highly recommended
Next is the comfort food hayashi special. This is Japanese curry, with hamburger steak pattie and deepfried shrimp. Upon first bite, it brought me back to Japan. This is exactly how a typical "homecooked" meal tasted. Of course you cant compare this to restaurant grade, but if you are Japanese this will remind you of home. The curry was the typical Japanese curry topped with mushroom, this is just meh. Next the hamburger steak, its isnt comparable to the restaurant grade but you can taste the texture of the meat (supermarket ground meat) with onion. Patty was moist but typical Lastly is fried shrimp. This was the typical Japanese style with their thick batter and eggy flavour. In short, decent meal will remind you of japanese home but not restaurant food. I cant stress this enough. great if you are Japanese, and missing the taste of home
Lastly I've ordered two typical japanese desserts. Both are prettymuch the same but one has an additional cookie and instead of pudding its rice and matcha?
Dango with matcha pudding, ice cream, and japanese bean paste (anko) this was pretty good, chewy dango (rice cake) and sweetness of ice crean and bean paste makes it a great Japanese dessert.
Personally I would give this a 4/5 Would recommend great place for you to relax and have a chill day
