Boy are we ever glad we stopped in. Out and about in Kitsilano area and saw the beer and burger for $9.95 sign. Wow what a deal! The burger was juicy and so tasty. It’s served on a brioche bun which was light and never got soggy like other burger buns. Beer selection was also great. Chose a beer from Dublin, so smooth and only $4.00 for an extra one. My daughter had the chicken burger. It was a quality piece of chicken breast crunchy outside and tender juicy inside, the mayo type sauce was very tasty. My son had the Fat Cow burger ( 2 beef patties, bacon, cheese and a fried egg) he loved it. We added fries for $2.50. They were homemade, crisp and super good. All burgers had a huge dill pickle. Service was excellent. Boris was efficient, grateful for us stopping in and very entertaining. Ate on a picnic table out on their patio. Had a wonderful evening. Will definitely tell friends about this gem of a place and return to try the chicken burger my daughter had! Returned a few months later for breakfast and were not disappointed. Ordered the Fried Chicken and Waffles. Chicken was so juicy and tender I didn’t want it to end. My daughter had the Kitsilano Breakfast with chilli and cornbread. She said it was delicious.

I have been meaning to try southern or creole food for a long time. I've seen them on tv - dishes like gumbo, chicken fried things, jambalaya etc and they look really delicious. I never knew we had a restaurant that serves it in Vancouver until I saw a deal on Groupon. I tried the jambalaya and the double chicken burger. The jambalaya had amazing flavors! They also did not skimp on the 6 whole perfectly cooked shrimp. Even the garlic bread was delicious. The double chicken burger definitely was quite hard to eat as a whole. It was gigantic. I ended up splitting it in half and eating with a knife and fork. The chicken was fried well - not hard crunchy, but a light crispy texture. The only downside was that there was a lot of meat but not enough sauce on the bun so mostly it felt like I was just eating fried chicken and not a burger. The fries were ok. They salt and peppered it in one spot but the tables have extra salt and pepper if needed. Overall, food was delicious and I'm glad we have a restaurant that serves southern food here. Parking may be a little hard since it is broadway but there are some side streets with free parking.

I ordered the chicken and waffles with poached medium eggs. The eggs came out poached hard. The yolks were stiff and had zero give to them. The server dismissively brought them back to the kitchen. He came out a couple minutes later with them and said plainly “these are poached medium”. I was pretty shocked to hear this but ate it begrudgingly. I ate what I could but it was very dry. The chicken was very thin. Not worth $17 pre tax + grat. My friend also ordered poached eggs and they came out as they should. It’s crazy to me that they can call both of them poached medium when one order has liquid yolks and the other has solid yolks. My friend ordered a Cesar that tasted like it had way too much Worcestershire sauce. You can see how brown it is in the photo. Not a good dinning experience overall.

I posted a very honest and accurate review of Deacons from my work google account. After I was accused of being a fake reviewer, and asked to show proof of visiting the restaurant (which I did, I showed my last card payment to Deacons which was May 16 2022), they could not accept that my review was accurate and from a recent date in the past week.

Prompting the owner to DELETE my review. So in case you would like to read what an honest customer had to say, please read below:

Beginning

I eat and drink at this spot on a weekly basis, sometimes as much as 2-3 times in a week. I have never been disappointed and have continued to bring new friends who have not yet been to Deacons, to the restaurant for a great time.

The last few times we visited we not only were charged an auto gratuity (unknowingly), friends of mine were treated very poorly when concerns about the food were raised. When reading some of these comments/replies from the owner, I am appalled by the level of unprofessionalism in these responses, instead of actually trying to resolve and address valid problems that have been brought up by paying customers.

My friends have been told they are not allowed to return to the restaurant, and if they do cops would be called (ridiculous and unnecessary), for no good reason. Deacons has lost me as a loyal customer until these issues addressed and I see that this restaurant can handle customer feedback appropriately.

UPDATE: Owner decided to be a wiseguy and call me out for being a fake review...see attached photo for confirmation you lousy establishment. How embarrassing. Wish I could give is a zero stars, this is the most ridiculous and ill mannered response I have ever seen...

Service - 5/5. Servers were very kind and quick with requests. For covid you can tell that they actually look at the vaccine cards as they made comments about the guests home location on their drivers license. Our sever was wonderful, he was quick to some jokes and efficient when asked for refills on coffee. Building - 4/5. The inside is tightly packed which caused it to be a bit loud. Maybe a coupled tables less to create a bit more space for moving around. But it doesn't hinder the experience. Food - 5/5. Two people had the BELTCH - substituted the tomatoes for avocado. The flavours balanced perfectly. One commented that if the avocado was sliced a little thinner to make it easier to bite. One had the classic eggs benny. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the holidays sauces was perfectly flavourful. Would ask for an extra scoop if we go again. One person had the veggy hash. The flavour was well balanced and the muffin was moist and perfect for on and j. Value for money - 5/5 for all the food, plus coffee, juice and substitutions. The value was very reasonable. And th e quantity of food provided was perfect. Some leftovers coming home for sure.

Only comment on food, was the hash browns could've been cooked a little longer. But that is a person preference for liking it a...

This is my favourite breakfast in Vancouver. It’s also a 2 minute walk from my apartment. Aside from that, service is always fantastic and quick. And, the presentation of the food is always great. Love all the staff too. Boris and crew In the morning are always courteous, efficient and helpful.

BUT I have two things I need to mention.

For breakfast meals, and I order either the kits breakfast or two eggs almost once a week, the toast is almost never buttered enough. Barely, almost every time. And, when you ask for more butter, they bring a cold package which doesn’t spread well. I please ask if the cooks could actually swipe the toast end to end. (Some of you might say, well well well look at this portly fella eating a big breakfast almost once a week, you should probably cut back on the butter. To that I say, I don’t care. I like buttery toast.)

Opening earlier than 10am would be fantastic. To the rest of my roommates who are typically hung over, 10 is usually fine for them. I doubt this will get any traction, but just a suggestion, opening earlier would make lots of morning people happier!

Anyway, over all it’s still my favourite place. I’ll keep coming back, and I do recommend it to lots of people. Thanks for the many great meals, and...
