Five-Star Feast at Ipoh Malay Cuisine: A Taste of Southeast Asia in Vancouver
Forget your passport - a trip to Ipoh Malay Cuisine in Vancouver is all you need to transport yourself to the vibrant culinary landscapes of Southeast Asia. My recent visit was nothing short of phenomenal, earning them a well-deserved five-star rating on my foodie scale.
The star of the show was undoubtedly the Singaporean Chili Crab. The colossal crustacean, bathed in a symphony of sweet, spicy, and umami-rich chili sauce, was a masterclass in flavor balance. Each bite was a messy, glorious explosion of textures - tender crab meat, crispy shell, and sticky, addictive sauce. I devoured every scrap, even resorting to using the provided bread to mop up the last drop of that heavenly sauce.
Moving on to the Beef Rendang, the depth of flavor and tenderness were truly impressive. The meat, slow-cooked in a complex blend of spices until it practically fell apart, melted in my mouth with each savory mouthful. The aromatic curry, infused with ginger, lemongrass, and fragrant coconut milk, was a warm hug for my soul.
But the culinary journey wasn't complete without washing it all down with the best Teh Tarik I've ever encountered. This frothy Malaysian milk tea, expertly pulled to perfection, was a revelation. The rich, creamy texture and perfectly balanced sweetness were the perfect counterpoint to the bolder flavors of the meal. Each sip was pure comfort and a testament to the restaurant's attention to detail.
Beyond the food, Ipoh Malay Cuisine's warm and inviting atmosphere added to the experience. The friendly staff, the vibrant décor, and the bustling energy made it feel like I was dining in a cozy street-side stall in Southeast Asia.
I left Ipoh Malay Cuisine feeling utterly satisfied and transported. It's not just a restaurant; it's an experience, a love letter to Southeast Asian cuisine executed with passion and authenticity. If you're looking for a culinary adventure in Vancouver, look no further than Ipoh Malay Cuisine. Prepare to be amazed, and bring your appetite - you'll need it!
5/5 stars. Highly recommend!
P.S. Don't forget to ask for extra napkins for the Chili Crab - you'll...

I order fried rice and nasi lemak, the taste was poor, 1.5/10. Too much MSG contained flavour, was salty and lack of spice - Not even close to authentic Malaysian food taste.
The waitress was so f-ing rude, didn't greet us politely when we enter the restaurant. While we placed order, she suddenly went dissappear before coming back to us after 5mins, WITHOUT APOLOGIZING FOR MAKING US WAITING FOR HER! Then because of her behaviour, I gave very small amount of tips coz she didn't even deserve to be given a single cent of tips. F-ing rude all the time.
They offer so-called "Ipoh Malay Satay"(or something else I cannot recall specifically but it CONTAINS PORK in it. Like, HELLO MALAY PEOPLE DID NOT EAT PORK, YOU SHOULD NAME IT SOMETHING ELSE FOR THIS DISH! I brought over my MALAY friend, flew all the way from IPOH, MALAYSIA, he got really offended seeing this. He still ate there because of me coz I tot the foods here taste better than the store in Richmond. They do really have extremely poor cultural awareness / common sense.
Then on the wall, there is a mispelling of Malaysia as "Malayisa" and seems like it was there for ages. This restaurant really disrespect Malaysia to its best but selling Malaysian dishes. Kind of insulted. I'm a Malaysian Chinese, seeing this makes me extremely disappointed with the owner of this restaurant and at the same time, feel ashamed of myself for bringing my IPOH MALAY friend here.
Very poor customer service, bad taste, induce racism & discrimination.
Would never come here again.
P/s: We both aware that this restaurant is serving non Halal dish, we are fine with that. Our concern is you name a dish as "Malay" dish but has pork inside? Are you serious? If it is named as "Malaysian" dish, then we are both okay with it. Seriously. Do you research, respect other race, please. Also, look at every single corner of your store to find the misspelt word of "Malaysia". You own the store, so...
Read moreIf you've never had Singaporean/Malaysian food before I guess this is passable. I grew up in Sg and spent many summers in KL and this was very mediocre. The highlight was the kway teow and Assam laksa. The normal laksa lacks flavor and the wrong noodles were used. The nasi lemak rice wasn't coconut enough. The curries were OK.
I don't understand why Vancouver has so much good dim sum/taiwanese/chinese/Indian/thai/vietnamese food but no one has seemed to be able to perfect singaporean/Malaysian staples.
What was really upsetting, however was the fact that we ordered 2 orders of satay (8 skewers total) and they literally gave us the smallest bowl of sauce. I attached a picture of the sauce because it was just so laughably little. When we asked for another bowl, the waitress told us curtly that it was another 1$. We were so shocked we just laughed and was like "really"?? It was 2 tbsp of sauce in the bowl. Like I understand food costs have risen but this is ridiculous.
Half the point of eating satay is the peanut sauce. We just said we will pay because you need the sauce to eat the satay. The sauces and satay themselves were also cold. Like it seems like they just took the sauce out of the fridge cold??? We were also shocked that they were so stingy with the sauce especially because we also ordered like $200+ worth of food... Like c'mon man. They ended up comping the extra sauce for us but I don't think I would order the satay from them or even come here again.
The ambiance/ decor was nice but that interaction was...
