I don’t find myself out in the Dunbar area that frequently but, after an enjoyable visit to MOA in the beginning of September, we stopped by Kuma Japanese Restaurant on Dunbar (across from the Tim Horton’s and liquor store). There didn’t seem to be many other shops on this street that were still open (guessing that they might eventually turn this block into condos…). This is a fairly small Japanese eatery but had some interesting choices on the menu. The first dish to arrive at our table was the Assorted Sashimi ($21.30 Chef’s Choice of 12 pieces). We were actually pretty impressed with the sashimi quality… 2 pieces of wild salmon, 2 pieces of slightly fatty salmon, 2 pieces of tuna, 3 pieces of tako (octopus), 2 pieces of plump scallops, and 4 slices of hokkigai (surf clam). The next dish to arrive at our table was the Spicy Agedashi Tofu ($5.05) – the sauce reminded me of the spicy sauce you get at Korean restaurants. Nice crispness to the exterior of the tofu. We also ordered their Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box ($13.05). While the sashimi and agedashi tofu were a bit slow to come out, the bento box was painfully slow to come out… it was about another 15 minutes after we received our first dishes. We did notice that another party came in after us and received their bento boxes way before we did. On the plus side, the food is actually made quite well. The thing that turned me off a bit was how slow our bento box came out (especially when people who come in after us and order after us receive the same dish before we do).

I write this review not because of the food quality but the way they forced tipping. I went to eat at Kuma restaurant on Dunbar and 18th and had a great meal, the bill came out to about $60. I went to pay and as I enter a tip of $1.50, the cashier questioned me if anything was wrong and canceled my transaction. I reply, nothing wrong. Then I proceeded with the 2nd transaction with the same tip amount and it was allowed to go through. When i got back to my table, about 2 minute later, the chef (maybe owner also, i am not sure) came directly to my table with my bill receipt and question why my tip was only $1.50 and that it should be at least 15%. He then went on to tell me my tip was not acceptable and don't come back to eat at the restaurant. It is embarassing for the restaurant when a chef/owner, cashier would approach a paying customer at their table demmanding a higher tip. Tip is optional and should not be mandatory. Why was it pushed so hard on a customer. I have never encounter such a situation like this. It's terrible that tipping culture has gotten this far. So if you are not willing to tip the "required" %, i would not reccommend this restaurant and please stay away. Terrible experience. Even if the food was good, I would never come back and will not reccommend any of my friends or people in general. Thank you

Come again after few years Still the best in town Run by real Japanese The quality of food is great Ofcourse it’s not those upscale fancy atmosphere But it’s a little family owned business Food is tasteless I even forgot took a photo of the sushi I had Too good The tempura is real deal Not those American or typical deep fried stuff It’s the technique u need to fried this tempura in Japanese style U can still see the transparency of the ingredients after fried. Not those which cover completely with thick flower The ingredients inside are still juicy and not like others which is dry or u can tell left over food The udon is nice especially the soup base It’s one of the best or the best in town which I will come back very often I recommend u to come Best Must try the spicy tuna roll Toro Tempura Udon

Worst service I have ever seen in Vancouver.

I went there around 8:30 pm, and double checked they were still able to cook teriyaki don. They let me pay first and I gave them the tips. Then I was astonished to see they give me a plastic bag to go after around 15 mins sitting at table (there were still several customers eating at tables at that time) with 0 table service, even no cup of water. Then why you received the tips? I didn't say to go anyway and u didn't even ask, if u think it's too late to accept new orders, u should just reject me from the very beginning. I didn't expect to pay for such rude service, and I asked my tips back after walking out of the restaurant and returning back.

Well, thank u for letting me to receive this marvelous service and I don't think I have the privilege to "enjoy" it again!

Btw, when I returned to ask my tips back as I received 0 table service, they said I was voluntary to give the tips. Well, good to know :)

Reply to the owner:

The man at the counter in your restaurant said I was voluntary to pay the tips. I only pay you tips if I receive table service but I didn't receive any.

I meant to dine in, I didn't say to go (and u didn't ask me dine in or to go at all), or why would I pay you the tips? I sat at the table around 15 mins with 0 table service, even no cup of water.

If u only accept to go at that time. U should tell me clearly before I pay u. If u told me then, I wouldn't pay u tips or I would change to another restaurant directly. I also don't understand why you asked me to pay u first before I even got my food.

I am sorry to see your refutation and the way you treat your customers. When u are not ready to serve your customers, u should just reject them. U receive the order and tips, u have the responsibility to maintain the quality of your service.

I personally won't come to your restaurant ever again, and I will encourage my friends...

Came here for the convenience of it being near my home. Took very long to take our orders and to bring us our order. Very pricey compared to other competitors in the area. Sushi was not good. Fish did not taste fresh, salmon is minced and filled with what tastes like tempura bits to make it seem fuller and tasted heavily of mayo. Overall not a great experience, will not be returning and not recommending. We tried the spicy salmon, unagi roll, paradise roll and beef teriyaki. The teriyaki was the only good option. The sushi rolls were falling apart and did not look like they were made by someone with experience.

Edit (replying to reply by the owner): To start off, the overpriced comment is based on other competitors in the area that offer better quality food at a lower price (Tonton sushi being one of the best in the area, highly recommend checking them out). Service was very poor, it took unreasonable long to prepare an order for 2 people compared to other small estatablishments I have dined at. At the end of the meal, I came to pay for my bill which pays for all the food that I ate because I was taught to never waste food and that is why we ate everything. We did not make any comments while eating because we noticed there were too many things that did not taste good and it was better to just leave promptly after dining. After dining I went to pay the bill and did not tip as I was not at all satisfied by the service or food. The server said oh, you pressed the no tip option, did you mean 20%, and I said no I mean no tip because the service was bad and the food was overpriced and not good compared to other competitors in the same area. I am most disappointed in the way they are interacting with me through Google. As a former restaurant owner, the way they are speaking is very rude and immature. A sorry does...
