Yan Bakery — Restaurant in Vancouver

I regret going with Yan bakery for my wedding. The day I went to just inquire about pricing and cake designs the owner was very pushy. She was friendly and nice to us but she was very pushy with selling her cakes, I had asked for a coffee cream cake but she kept saying it’s better to get the fruit cake ( now I think it’s because it costs more than just making a coffee cream filling). She made me feel embarrassed for even wanting a coffee flavored cake for my wedding because she said not everyone likes coffee. So suggested to go with strawberry and mango, I felt obligated to listen to her because she was very pushy and even brought out some samples for us to try so I felt bad. The cake was good but it wasn’t what I wanted, but again I felt pressured by her. I wanted to go home and discuss with my fiancé first before committing but she kept saying I need to pay the deposit right now or else she can’t provide an invoice. I said a few times that I want to think about it first but she kept pressuring me, so already being stressed with wedding planning and needing to get a cake sorted out I did end up paying that same day. She did work with me on my budget so I did appreciated that. The cost included delivery and decorating the day of. She ensured me that I just need to provide flowers the day of and she would handle everything else. We provided flowers on our wedding day for the cake but my sister said when Helen came to drop off the cake she was in a rush and said because there wasn’t a designated cake table at that time (there was a small table available that day provided by the restaurant, so I’m not sure why she had said that) that she’s not going to decorate the cake. She almost left but my sister stopped her and asked her to decorate the cake like she had promised as part of the transaction. When we cut the cake during our reception the fruit was still frozen, a few people had mentioned to us that the fruit in their cake was frozen and we had already left it out for at least 3 hours. Helen knew what time we were going to cut the cake so that should have been accounted for when she was making it. I will never go back to this bakery, I felt she talked a lot about how great her bakery is and that’s why so many people keep going back but honestly my experience was not great. I could look past her being pushy but when my sister said she almost left without decorating the cake an hour before my reception started it ruined any respect I have for her and her business. This is not to talk negatively about her cake, the sample I had was good. If I had an option, I would give 10 stars to Helen and hubby team. Such a sumptuous strawberry mousse cake. The texture of the sponge cake was meltingly soft. Fresh sweet tangy strawberries were a cherry on the pie. Not to forget the surprise stuffing of pineapple that gave an exotic touch to the cake. Helen’s suggestion, especially knowing how yummy the cake is gonna be, was so close to perfect. If I had ordered even an inch smaller, we all would be left craving for more. Last but not the least, Mr. Yan is incredible not just with preparing such amazing cakes but he is also writes beautifully on the cakes. His handwriting on the cakes is not a skill in English or chinese languages only, but also he did an amazing job writing those in an Indian language…!! Helen was very patiently, rather enthusiastically involved in sending me a sample picture of the writing to make sure I like it before they finalize it. My first time at Yan Bakery was in spring of 2012. I didn't know a bakery exist here because I seldom drive along East Hastings and I don't live in the area. Anyway, I was referred to this bakery by a friend who had her wedding cake made here. She said everything about the place was positive so I went there to give this place a try for MY birthday cake. I ordered blueberry mousse cake and it was just delicious! Ever since then I have been going back to Yan Bakery for more birthday cakes and wedding cake. The only issue I had was with the wedding cake as it arrived late because the driver had an incident along the way and Helen had to deliver the cake herself. Overall, I have positive experience with Yan Bakery.
