Went for a company party. Great attentive and accommodating service from the wait staff. Billed as a restaurant and wine bar, the wine list does not disappoint and is quite extensive with some delicious choices. Parking lot was free (always a major plus), just too small for the amount of people we had, so some people had to go find street parking. Being a small brick party room, it fit our group of about 30, though once filled, got very loud as it echoed with everyone talking at once. The salad and entree portions were much smaller than expected, especially the steak medallions, as they were much smaller than we were told they would be (8-10oz) but ended up being three few mm thick, smaller than palm sized slices maybe pushing 4oz at the most. Mine was also missing the garnish that was on everyone else's dish. The vegetable side was quite small with only three carrot slices and a few parsnip pieces along with mashed potatoes. For the price and seeing as it all tasted so good I would have very much liked to have more than a few bites before it was gone. To end on a high note, the dessert was great. I HIGHLY recommend the caramel cheesecake as it was a nice big portion, creamy, flavourful, with a crunchy layer on top and so delicious.

We came for dinner on Saturday for 5:15pm. This restaurant is now part of the Charcoal Group and as such, excellence is always something everyone strives for. Free parking is located behind the building. The landscaping around the building is beautifully done and clean. Staff here are absolutely outstanding! Everyone here is friendly, attentive, personable and hard working. Our server, Teo, was equally or even more so. The Sole and Caesar Salads were excellent and definitely worth getting. The Gnocchi was so good my wife wanted to lick the plate! The flavours were outstanding. The Plant Based Ted's Chicken Piadina Sandwich was tasty but I found it was a bit too salty for my liking; I loved the roasted garlic aïoli though. Our friends had to return their fries because they were raw in the middle; but it was quickly remedied and made to perfection. The baked cheesecake is phenomenal! So smooth and creamy and the compot was a perfect accompaniment. Unfortunately my triple chocolate cake was dry and hard and had to be returned; the rest of the cake was taken out of circulation because it did not meet their standards. Although our evening was not perfect, we would definitely be back.

This was a disappointing experience. The Good: The pan seared scallops. The Bad: The Cabernet, the lobster linguine, the soft fried calamari and especially the atrocious alleged Tenderloin Medallions, and the fact that we were told that there was only a table by the bar available when for the entire duration of our meal there were empty booths behind us. The waiter asked if I would like the Tenderloin medium or medium rare, I have to wonder if that was a joke. I asked for the medium rare, only to find 3 slivers of meat that looked like they had been shaved from the tail of a tenderloin, absolutely not the promised medallion. They ranged between 3-5 mm in thickness (see attached pic, I put my knife against it for perspective). Expectedly it wasn't medium rare, it was so well done it was the first time in my life I've had tenderloin that was tough and chewy. I took two bites and sent it back. The other dishes were average apart from the Scallops which were decent. The wine seemed off, and since it came in a decanter I couldn't tell if it really was what we had ordered. Management apologized and took the tenderloin off the bill. Our server Philip was excellent though.

Sole in Waterloo is an extraordinary dining destination that captivates from the moment you walk in. The ambiance strikes a delightful balance between modern sophistication and cozy charm, making it the perfect spot for any occasion.

Now, let’s talk about the food—wow! The menu is a vibrant celebration of fresh, local ingredients. Start with a comforting soup, especially the French onion soup, which is rich, flavorful, and topped with a perfectly melted layer of cheese. It’s the ideal way to warm up your palate.

The steaks are perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor, showcasing the chef's creativity and skill. Don’t miss the fresh salads, which are a refreshing complement to any meal, featuring seasonal produce and house-made dressings that elevate the dining experience. For seafood lovers, the salmon is a standout dish, expertly prepared and packed with flavor, making it a great alternative to the steak.

And don’t skip dessert! The dessert menu is equally impressive, featuring indulgent options that are the perfect finale to your meal. The triple chocolate cake is a must-try—rich, decadent, and utterly satisfying. Alternatively, the crème brûlée offers a delightful contrast with its creamy texture and perfectly caramelized top.

The wine list at Sole is thoughtfully curated, offering an impressive selection that complements the menu beautifully. Whether you’re in the mood for a bold red to enhance your steak or a crisp white to pair with your salmon, the staff is always ready to recommend the perfect pairing.

What truly sets Sole apart is the exceptional service. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, making you feel right at home while guiding you through the menu and wine choices.

Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner or a lively get-together with friends, Sole delivers an experience that lingers in your memory long after the last bite. This place is a culinary treasure in Waterloo, and I can't...

A fast food experience at Sole Restaurant and Wine Bar

My husband and I had dinner this week on Valentine's Day at Sole Restaurant. A reservation was made for 16:45, we arrived on time, were sited at a tiny table and then the host told us that someone else was coming to have dinner at that table at 18:15. I actually thought that I heard incorrectly, but the she confirmed that we only had a 1.5hr to have our dinner and clear out. Not too romantic a start ! The restaurant booked two shift dinners per table (may be three?) for that night. It is a popular day for couples to go out for dinner. People go to Sole for special occasions, as it is quite expensive and considered to be high end dining establishment. How special should the patrons feel, when they are rushed and limited in their visit. The menu for the evening was another surprise - it was a selection of dishes, selected by the management. The choice of appetizer and entres was poor, in other words not the fine dining that we expected. We had no other option, but to order from that menu. The food was mediocre, and it is understandable - mass production never results in good quality and taste.

The service was nice, and that is why two stars.

All in all, it was a fast food experience for a very high price. I do understand that restaurant business suffered a lot during covid pandemic, and they need to make up for it. Businesses suffered, but so did we, the Patrons. When we come to a fine dining, it means we want to celebrate an occasion, or event. It is quite disappointing to spoil such a good intention. And also waist of our money.

The impression from that dinner was so negative, that I will not come back and will always tell my friends about the fast food dining at the Sole Restaurant.

Sincerely,

Dila

PS. 20 yrs ago we had our little wedding dinner at the Sole, and my husband thought it would be nice...

Always well prepared food presented with class UPDATE 2024: A year or more ago Sole was sold to the Charcoal group of restaurants, as I understand. The restaurant was recently renewed inside, which it needed. My wife and I dined there for the first time since the new ownership/renovations. It used to be one of a few restaurants in town that we enjoyed for a nice meal with excellent food and service and atmosphere. Unfortunately we will not likely dine there again. I would guess they have added 30% more seats to the restaurant in the same space. As a result it is EXCEPTIONALLY noisy, and there is very little privacy from any other diners. Don't eat in the small dining room (used to be an events room) as they have finished it in all hard surfaces and when full it almost hurts your ears. Not a single sound absorbing surface in that room. The main dining room is very tight now and looks like a cafeteria when considering the seating density The servers were nice enough but not engaging, and of course you couldn't hear what they said most of the time. The bright spot was that the food was very good but not perfect (our short ribs were served lukewarm, not hot). Flavours were great for the Sole salad and the short ribs and presentation and serving size was just right. We were told when reserving that we could not spend more than 90 minutes in the restaurant, which I found snobby for what might have been fine dining, not fast food. However, not a problem as we were served quickly and in and out in under an hour for 2 courses. As I said, next dinner out we will go to our other favourites in KW for a very nice meals - a list that is now...
