While they got my order wrong (she gave me rice instead of roti) it was quickly remedied and we were on our way.
Our first time at LJ's, so while I didn't know their menu nor had time to ask for suggestions etc, I went with three options I'd normally order at a roti shop.
Curry Chicken Roti (as mentioned the lady thought I said rice I guess, but that was corrected after). I wish I had time to eat the roti while it was off the tawa (hot) we had a long drive ahead of us, so I didn't get to it hours later. That said - the wrapper kept it warm (well done). I did heat it up later in the microwave, and to be honest, it didn't go overly soggy or clump together as some I've had in the past (well done). The roti itself wasn't overly greasy (well done) and the curry itself had a good (not great flavor). I really think they have an excellent product here, but their peppersauce (hot sauce) needs works. The areas where it was in the roti, had a tart or sour taste and no real heat. I'd also add a bit more curry potato to the mix. A good roti overall, with a ton of boneless (dark meat - well done) chicken and the size was commendable.
The Jerk Chicken With Rice. Another good option, except we wished it had a bit of heat to it. Wonderful overall flavor, but IMHO jerk needs a little heat. That said, this is Welland and maybe they are catering to the heat level locals can handle. I cannot fault them for that.
2 Side orders of plain Paratha roti. Again, not overly greasy (well done), packaged the same as the other roti I had (kept warm and didn't go dry), however I found them a bit small (circumference) as compared to other roti shops we visit in Ontario (basically the same prices else where).
Good food, reheats well, good value for money and great customer service (the guy at the counter - apologies as I didn't get your name). You guys are representing the Caribbean/Guyana well. Free parking at the front is always good. The sign at the front is...
Read moreJP's Roti House is a true gem in the culinary scene! Our recent dining experience here left us utterly satisfied and eager for more. The flavours, oh, the flavours! They hit every mark, leaving our taste buds dancing with delight.
Let's talk about the Doubles - soft, fluffy, and bursting with traditional spices, they were a perfect start to our meal. The Pholouries followed suit, crispy on the outside, pillowy on the inside, and paired beautifully with the tangy tamarind sauce. And the Cassava was pure perfection, with the soft, chewy texture of cassava perfectly complementing the hearty fillings.
Moving on to the mains, the Salt Fish & Bakes were a delightful nod to Caribbean cuisine, with the bakes being perfectly fluffy and the salt fish offering a punch of flavour.
The Casareep Chicken with Chow Mein Noodles was a delightful surprise, with tender chicken coated in a luscious sauce that perfectly complemented the savoury noodles. The Curry Shrimp lacked a certain flavour element; it didn't possess the same richness as the other dishes. I believe it would have benefited from a frying process to enhance its flavour profile. The dish seemed to be overwhelmed by the abundance of curry, with potatoes immersed in a curry-infused broth.
Now, let's talk about the stars of the show - the Rotis. The Jerk Chicken Roti was a fiery explosion of flavour, with tender chicken infused with the smoky, spicy goodness of jerk seasoning. The Boneless Chicken Curry Roti was a symphony of spices, with tender chicken enveloped in a rich, aromatic curry sauce.
Overall, JP's Roti exceeded our expectations in every way. From the warm hospitality to the sensational flavours, this place is a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Caribbean cuisine. We'll definitely be back for more! The only place worth eating for Guyanese food in Welland.
Sorry about the lack of pictures we were too busy eating to...
Read moreI took the time to read all of the reviews on LJ's and I have to agree with all of them. LJ's Roti Shop is a modest take-out found in a small plaza just north of Thorold and Niagara intersection. LJ's has done a "soft open" and I only heard about it though my Facebook feed. To my knowledge, this is the only Roti Shop in the south Niagara Region and it is truly welcomed. Once you enter the shop, you are immediately welcomed with a warm smile and the fragrance of good home cooking. I decided to try a boneless chicken roti, and the guyanese in me, needed to try the dahl roti. Portions was generous and I chose to have my chicken roti without the hot sauce. I needed to decide if the curry was up to par. I have to say that they did not disappoint. You can tell from the first bite that this roti, this curry and chicken was made with experience and love. There was a wonderful balance of savoury and with the perfect amount of heat. Enough heat to make your lips tingle. Most boneless curry chicken gives you dry white meat. The chicken was moist and tender, the curry reminded me of my grandma's curry. The roti was cooked correctly, most rotis are dry and crackly. Perfect portion of dahl that it did not dry our the roti. I could not put this chicken curry roti down! It was so good! I had the privilege of having a cassava ball. To best describe it would be a hand held mash potato ball. It was heaven! The cooks really have a skill of balancing their herbs and spices! One other appetizer you must try is their jerk chicken flatbread. I never tried this before and the mixture of jerk chicken, cheese and green onion on a flat bread was amazing. I am really looking forward to my next visit where I could try their chow mein or peas and rice. It has been forty years since I had such a great curry! Well done LB's Roti Shop! You have a loyal...
