I’ve been to Sorentino‘s West a few times as I live nearby and I always leave with the same impression, great service but the food is just good. That’s it, . . . not great, just good.
The ambience and service deserve a near five star but it would not be accurate to give five stars for the food when there is potential for improvement. In fairness to these guys, nobody in Edmonton is doing over the top Italian. There are a couple of places by a restaurant group that are nearing that high praise, but this group is not it. They were close at one time when the downtown location was the flagship.
Then why is the West End doing so well, two reasons; the service is top-notch and the establishment is frequented by the locals in the nearby well to do neighborhood. It seems that great service and good food is good enough for this part of town.
The place is packed on most weekend nights, a reservation is suggested. Tonight, it being a Monday, we sat in a packed section-because that is where they sat everyone, leaving the bulk of the room empty.
Tonight I had the six pack of small plates. For a fee you can have any three (or any six) of six appetizer offerings. I went with one of each of all six. Presentation is much better than flavour with the best being the Arancini. The one downside was the mushroom bruschetta drizzled with truffle oil, it was either too much oil or not the best quality oil. Either way, truffle oil should be used more sparingly as it is a strong flavour.
My dinner mate had the Carbonara and the Prawns-Calamari combo. He and I come regularly and he many times gets these dishes, I’ve picked at these same two dishes in the past and they are decent choices. The prawns are a good size.
In the past, I’ve had the potato pizza and although flavourful, each time I do I have to remind them please make it well done and please don’t slather it with oil. Be sure to request a lighter oil preparation for the dishes I mentioned as oily above.
I will continue to return for the big glasses of vino, the great service and, my eye caught a great looking Veal Cannelloni (w white sauce) as I was leaving. I want to test that out next time because one thing I do not order in Italian restaurants...

Read morehorrible I just finished eating at the west end Sorrentinos and it was a horrible experience. I would have made more of an issue at the restaurant but I was taking my mother and father out for my mothers’ 70th birthday and I did not want to cause a scene thus disrupting what I had hoped to be a nice evening. We arrived and ordered our appetizers of calamari and mussels in white wine sauce. Both of the dishes were warm at best but as it was my mothers night and she seemed content I decided to not say anything. We ordered our mains while we were eating our appetizers and then waited for over an hour for our mains to arrive. Our server did not acknowledge the amount of time that we had to wait nor was she really around for us to question how long our mains were taking. When our dishes finally arrived my mothers lasagna had a film over the sauce. I brought that up to our server and her response was “It comes from sitting under the heat lamp” which begs two questions; Why was it under the heat lamp to the point it had a visible film? Does it even matter the reason, why did our server not take it back? My spaghetti was warm and the eggs on top were rather chilled as well,my wife had a shortrib which was very inconsistent throughout in terms of the temperature. My dad enjoyed his meal on the most part but I am unsure if he just didn’t want to complain. Unprompted the manager came out and offered us free desert for the wait, though we did not want dessert we took the offer mainly due to getting some form of redemption for the meal. The tiramisu was good but the crème brulee was very cold and the texture was very off. I am saddened by this experience and I will never visit your establishment again nor will I ever recommend it to others. We spent close to $300 and honestly I feel like my...
