Clearly a hidden gem when it comes to Indian restaurants - food was freshly prepared, had the right mix of spices and packs a spicy punch. Service was decent and the overall restaurant atmosphere was inviting.
Food The dishes were well prepared, fresh and very flavourful. The quantity was excellent and worth the cost per fish. The smells and flavour of the food definitely transports you back to India. We had the chicken curry, the ghee mutton Biryani, roti and then some butter naan. The roti and naan were a bit disappointing as they did not compare to freshly prepared Indian bread and this would be the one area the food fell down slightly.
Atmosphere The restaurant is very well designed and seating is comfortable. Where they fall down slightly is their water glasses had water or finger stains on them and had to be sent back. They also provide rather large eating plates which feel more like a charger plate than the actual plate but still work. I worry sometimes when the deco is so on point if that means the food could suffer or the price to quantity could be off but not at this restaurant.
Service The servers were attentive, willing to help and answered questions we had and made the dining experience pleasurable. Mind you we were only the second table there so it wasn't very busy.
I recommend you give this restaurant a try as you won't be...
Read moreOrdered a paneer 65 Biryani today. On the menu it says paneer, vegetables etc. but when we opened the box it was only paneer and flavoured rice. Extremely disappointed as the restaurant denied being able to see this menu online and said paneer 65 Biryani did not have vegetables.
This attached menu is a screenshot from the view menu option from 5months ago so wondering how does the dish change so promptly.
Check priorly when you order for items from here because this can be the case for other options in the menu too.
Since this place had good reviews we decided to order from here but even the Biryani was a let down which was so salty. Even the chicken 65 Biryani ordered was very much like tikka chicken and flavoured rice, no essence of Biryani at all. The place is called Basmati, but the joke was that the rice used for Biryani was some cheap quality basmati rice which was overcooked. Never had such an instance at Charminar at both their Scarborough and Whitby locations and now I accolade them for being consistent. This place can be an easy miss. Second time ordering from here and both the times the food was a let down.
To each one their own, but If longing for genuinely good Biryani and not flavoured rice, I feel Charminar is consistent and much more better an...
Read moreWe ordered Panner tikka masala, Butter naan, Garlic naan and samosa.
Samosa was good. Nothing to complain as such but it’s definitely not punjabi samosa. Just a bit salty.
Paneer tikka masala - they should probably change the name to panner masala. It had no flavours of tikka masala. All it had was the flavour of sliced n fried onion in the gravy. No capsicums nor the panner tasted like tikka masala. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who loves and knows how a good panner tikka masala tastes.
Butter naan - we had to call the staff serving food to know if it was even butter naan. We thought they gave us plain naan by mistake. But she confirmed it was butter naan and there was literally no butter. But she was kind enough to offer adding some butter to it.
Garlic naan - this was fine. No complaints as such.
Overall not a good experience as the two main dishes were not up to the mark.
The girl serving food went to two other tables where people were dining to ask how the food tasted but didn’t bother to come to us. Assuming it’s probably our questions about the...
