State and main was a staple for my small family and I. We have been coming for years and have enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Tonight on the other hand we had a different experience. We arrived around 8:50 and were seated at 9pm, it was only the 3 of us - myself, my partner and my child (2 years old). The host was warm and polite and brought us to our table we had some time to look over our menu and realized we were waiting almost 20 minutes to be served for drinks, as a server in the past I can look past issues like that and realize servers get caught up and disregard it. Our server finally came to our table after 20 minutes and did not look pleased to serve us, she didn’t talk much and almost look uninterested, which again i disregarded. My partner asked her what they had on tap and she just opened the menu and pointed without saying a word. After that I had to lead the conversation from drinks to apps to mains. That was the only time we communicated with our server the entire night.
After an hour we did not receive our food and noticed our server was walking past us, being inattentive and blatantly ignoring us. Our table checks were not done, we didn’t get asked about other drink orders or get our table cleared the food was brought out by others (hosts) almost like we were being avoided and I ended up getting my food to go because I felt so uncomfortable. Our server then proceeded to come beside us as we were seated next to the pos system and SLAM her pos machine after overhearing how she was treating us. Another server (who was amazing - she had red hair and a tattoo on her forearm) picked up on this and actually took care of us. She was polite, attentive and was giving us quality service and we ended up tipping her over 28$ based on the minimal time she spent with us.
I love state and main, I do believe there was a bias here at the restaurant especially being the only family of colour there, there could be a preconceived notion based on our appearance that the first server felt she had to treat us a certain way. If it wasn’t for our second server I would never ever come here again. I hope that the way others are treated changes for the future guests and that everyone has an experience opposite from mine.
Side note: our first server was blonde with slightly curled hair...
Read moreAbsolutely horrible experience! If there were an option for zero stars I would have chosen it. Took our Dad to celebrate his 78th birthday this evening. Despite arriving on time for our confirmed reservation for 5pm for a party of 5. We were asked upon arrival by the seating hostess if we think we could finish our dinner in one hour because they had a larger group coming in for 6pm. We said possibly but didn't know for sure, stating it depended on them. We ordered as quickly as possible , skipping an appetizer because we felt rushed. We ordered our dinner and drinks within 10min after being seated. The food came after about 15 min of being ordered and at 548pm, while still eating, we were informed by our waitress that the other party had arrived early and asked if we could move to a booth. My Dad requires a walker to get around due to bad knees, and the move to the booth wasn't possible as it was a 12inch step up to the booth. About 5 min later, we were again approached by one of the hostesses who again asked us to move, when we resisted, she said "in fairness, you we're a walk in", After showing this very rude hostesses my confirmed text reservation received the day before and pointed out how wrong she was, she retreated back to the hostess desk never to be seen again. These hostesses were beyond rude. The other early arriving guests were seated next to us glaring at us constantly while we finished dnner as if we were at fault for sitting in "their" spot. No doubt the unprofessional hostesses blamed us for not leaving in our allotted 1 hr time limit. We were never asked by the waitress if they could correct this somehow, we paid and then asked to see the manager upon leaving as we felt very poorly treated. The "managing partner", Josette Gallant was very unhelpful, just saying that she was "sorry we had a bad experience ". We had already paid and tipped our waitress, so nothing could be comped. She basically took the side of the hostesses and sure didn't seem to sorry despite being a "managing partner ". Anyone reading this please take your money somewhere else. This type of poor customer service shouldn't...
Read moreHave been here once before and it was great. However I can’t say the same for tonight. I went with a group of five friends and myself and we sat on the patio. The server greeted us and was originally friendly. However after ordering a drink, the waiter ID’d me and it went downhill from there. We were a young group, all in our early twenties. It seemed after the waiter saw how young we were, his level of service went downhill immediately. After bringing us our drinks, he said he would be right back to take our orders. He did not return for 20 minutes. He gave attitude when we asked questions. We waited 45 minutes to an hour for our food. I want to point out that there were only five other tables on the patio and the restaurant was not busy at all. Other tables that arrived 30+ minutes after us received their food before us. One of my friends ordered an appetizer with their meal and did not receive it until the food came out. The waiter did not check on us once after we got our food to see how everything was. Everyone had to ask for refills after having empty cups. Eventually we asked for our bills. We were so unsatisfied with the service that we decided not to tip and we were going to speak to a manager on the way out. When the first bill was paid, the waiter said “no tip? okay” and slammed the bill down onto the table. He continuously walked away in between bills and left the machine on the table for a few minutes. After the last bill was paid, he said very loudly for the rest of the patio to hear “next time you guys go out to eat, if you’re not gonna tip, go to mcdonalds next time there is one down the street”. That was extremely unprofessional. All of us typically are great tippers but the service was so poor that we decided not to. We spoke to a manager and she said she was mortified with how we were treated but offered no type of compensation. One of my friends had to speak up, and ask if there was anything that they would do for us as it was horrible to be treated that way in a restaurant. She then gave us 10$ vouchers, but I will not be...
