In the long winter days of Winnipeg you need something to warm you from inside and not just outside, of course theres alcohol but other than alcohol, soups and a rich broth-y soup with well right texture boiled noodles and well cooked meats. It feels like a long overdue hug that lingers for a while with you.
It was long overdue for me to have a good rich and nice ramen and the Cho Ichi group(wasabi, cho ichi ramen, chosabi) although a bit expensive it is totally worth the whole experience. To top it all I had a good field day at Thermea just before going here and needed all the salt, broth, cream, protien and veggies.
Ramen is a perfect example of Japanese cooking of Sa Shi Su Se So(sugar, salt, soy vinegar, miso). The slow mellow feeling of warm broth flowing down your throat to your stomach and feeling the taste of soy, miso, meat, fish sauce and adding some chili oil with it and then slurping the chewy noodles that offer the right stoppage in between slurping hot soup and enjoying the after taste of the soup.
We opted for the Pork broth soup with lobster(set up like those in anime) and spicy garlic miso soup with sous vide chicken that had quite a kick to it. We also had a karage chicken Bao along with Takoyaki and both were really tasty. Will most definitely get back to eat just their karage chicken it was super tasty and a must try of the sides.
Their space is super warm, and relaxed over all and the wait staff does a fantastic job in explaining and getting your order. Although they seem to have a lot of orders amongst limited staff they seem to do a great job and hope they get tip money as they deserve it.
Most definitely...
Read moreInitial visit review I personally wasn't a fan of the amount of msg that was in the soup base, but I also know people who love it.
We asked for recommendations. We were told to get the chicken karaage and the pork bun. The pork bun was done very well though I felt it was slightly pricey for the one piece. The chicken was good and reminded me of slightly larger chicken nuggets that we could dip in the yuzu Mayo.
I had recently been to another Ramen shop which did not use MSG. So I did have problems with this one because I always feel that the best ramen restaurants do not use the shortcut. Their noodles were served al dente which I also do not prefer. I didn't take a star away because there's a difference between my personal preference and something done poorly. My friend also wasn't a fan though of what we felt was an under cooked noodle.
there are things that I really like about this place however. They have a Ramen challenge which is 3.5 times the size of a regular Ramen bowl and you have 20 or 25 minutes to eat at all. If you do manage you will get a victory t-shirt and the noodles will be free.
Overall it's an ok place. I give it a 4-star because I would return and try other things. I don't know if I found anything that I was absolutely in love with on this visit but it is my initial review so time will tell if the star rating changes.
They do have a parking lot which makes it easy to get into the store. Service was middling. She was not very talkative. She would respond if we ask questions but did not go out of her way. I liked the atmosphere. Much more polished and defintely not a mom...
Read moreI've been on a quest for ramen in Winnipeg and was hoping Cho Ichi would be able to bring a unique culinary experience to our otherwise lack of ramen joints in the city. I ordered the miso ramen with chasu pork, a side of okonomiyaki fries and calimari legs. They boldy advertise their house made ramen noodles which I found were literally a step up from pre packaged noodles in terms of taste, texture and consistency. The soup lacked the deep rich flavor I was hoping from a 12 hour broth. While presented nicely the lack of flavour and small amount of meat for a $12.95 bowl left something to be desired. Some state Cho Ichi is the best ramen they ever had, but even Kyu Bistro had a better broth, and thick cut chasu and was more filling. A good ramen shouldn't leave me craving the $1 packet I purchase from the supermarket as this did.
The calamari legs surprised me, not many places serve just legs which are a favorite of mine. These were covered in a crisp spicy coating and piled high and made for a tasty side. However the okonomiyaki fries while a good idea and presented well need a bit of work. The tonkatsu sauce overpowered the fries so much with its overwhelming tang that I couldn't eat the bottom layer which was drowning in it. If they had just lightly drizzled it on top there would have been a much better balance between salty, sour and sweet.
The restaurant itself was pleasant and clean. Hopefully since they are so new they will have time to figure out how to best tweak their dishes. Pricing is par for the course but for the interim my choice eatery for ramen is Yujiro...
