First to define a calzone (Google it if you dont believe me): "cal·zo·ne /kalˈzōnē,ˌkalˈtsōnā,ˌkalˈzōn/ a type of pizza that is folded in half before cooking to contain a filling." "A typical calzone is made from salted bread dough, baked in an oven and is stuffed with salami, ham or vegetables, mozzarella, ricotta and Parmesan cheese. Different regional variations on a calzone can often include other ingredients that are normally associated with pizza toppings." PROBLEM: we were in the mood to try somewhere new & assumed that 1. Mr Calzone served calzones described above and 2. It would be fast food (quick, cheap) When we saw the "halal" sign I should have realized that it would taste different. But I figured they couldn't use the word "calzone" if it was unappetizing. WRONG. The young man who served us was pleasant (otherwise I would be looking to give it a 0), but we should have left when i asked if we could order extra mozzarella and he said if we wanted mozzarella, it would cost extra. One calzone, about $20. When it was ready (almost 20 minutes later), we took it & went on our way, now running a bit late. But when I bit into it, I was grossed out to just taste hot coleslaw (and I like coleslaw, but EVERY Canadian place I've ever bought coleslaw served it fridge cold)! The "meaty" calzone we ordered had much less meat than coleslaw; I couldn't even taste clearly if it was the correct meat filling! Will never go back! Only good things to say: it was a reasonable size, and the dough was...
Read moreI called ahead to pre order, I was looking for a simple pepperoni and mushroom calzone. Apparently you cannot get that here, I was told I had to choose one from the list, the employee on the phone suggested I order the meaty calzone and leave the chicken out but add in mushrooms. OK so I confirmed that would simply be a ground beef, pepperoni and mushroom calzone? They said yes! Great! I ordered the lunch box special that also included fries and a pop for $18. Perfect. Great service! But when I got out to the car to take a bite of my calzone, it had coleslaw....INSIDE it! Who puts cold creamy coleslaw inside a pizza calzone? What am I missing here? Is this not your typical calzone place, with a name like Mr.Calzone. I looked at the online menu, each of the listed pre designed calzones include coleslaw as an ingredient. Not to be confused as a side dish! So I was expecting and hoping for your typical pizza style calzone with pep, mush, beef, pizza sauce and cheese! Nope! No cheese! No pizza sauce! Instead, garlic creamy coleslaw! I managed to eat less than half of it, but knew soon enough that the coleslaw was not agreeing with me! I dont know where these coleslaw calzones are inspired from, because any where else ive had a calzone, they did not have cold salad in them! Needless to say, I won't be back. Won't let me create my own toppings, and puts cold creamy coleslaw in... no thank you! Very...

I stopped by the Pembina location around 7:50 PM on a Thursday and ordered one of their signature calzones. First impression? The portion was huge—perfectly baked with a golden, crispy crust and sliced for easy sharing (or not!). The filling was flavorful, cheesy, and satisfying, and it came with a side of dipping sauce that really elevated the whole experience. The box itself was fun and colorful, and the branding felt very welcoming. I even took a quick photo in front of some flowers—classic tourist move, I know, but the packaging was worth it! Compared to what I usually get back in Montreal, this was a nice surprise. It's casual, hearty, and feels like something made with care. Whether you're a local or a visitor like me, Mr. Calzone is definitely worth checking out if you're in Winnipeg and craving comfort food with a twist. Rating: 9/10 – Would come back again if I visit Winnipeg...
