KFC Main Review - KFC 1125 Main St. Winnipeg, R2W 3S4
Having just been released from prison, I had not had KFC chicken - an old and fondly remembered favorite - in many years. I have been out on day-parole for over 2 months, but have not been able to get any ID issued yet - which has prevented me from getting my Old-Age Security pension hooked up, leaving me in a bit of a financial limbo. A friend graciously offered to help me out with some pocket money a few days ago, so I was able to buy some toiletries and put some money on my Peggo transit card, which I did at the Shoppers Drugs on Main & Redwood. On my way back to the half-way house where I reside (I refuse to call it "home") I noticed the KFC in the same strip-mall, and on an impulse decided to treat myself to my first KFC in 20+ years (and of course as a concerned citizen I felt it my duty to assure myself their quality had not deteriorated over the years 😉). So I walked into the KFC at 1125 Main St, and my first impression was that the decor was rather spartan and institutional, but very clean and tidy. I didn't want to spend too much money, so I just ordered the Go-Bucket of Popcorn Chicken and fries for $6.99 and a glass of water. All the staff were very courteous and helpful, and my order was ready in 5 minutes. I noticed that there was a glassed off dining area, which was empty, but I just sat at one of the two small table units by the service station and had my meal, which I enjoyed immensely. The chicken was very tender and done just right, and the fries were crispy and very tasty. I remembered the old days (60s & 70s) when KFC was famous for the delicious chicken, but notorious for the soggy, bland fries. But I also recall seeing something in the media a while ago about them finally taking notice of the issue and doing a whole "mea culpa" campaign around how they were going to fix the problem. Well, I guess they were not just blowing smoke, for they are now the best fast-food fries I have tried to date. Kudos to KFC for coming through on their commitment. So, all in all - a very pleasurable and tasty interlude in my busy day. The decor of the new KFCs seems to be a bit more utilitarian and less cozy than I remember - but I guess it's more geared to today's pick-up and drive-thru culture. Though I still enjoy going for a nip at Sals, a Whopper at Burge King, or A&W's delicious onion rings with my daughter Stasii and family, I think I will be visiting KFC regularly...
Read moreI love that this location is a KFC and a Taco-bell. I had ordered a three peace combo with a side of gravy from the KFC menu and a hardshell taco from the Taco-bell menu.
The chicken was super greasy and had no flavour. The fries were old and cold. The gravy was tasteless. The pepsi must have been out or low on syrup because it tasted more like carbonated water than it should.
The hardshell taco was very good but the shell was a little stale. (Some bias here as i love tacos)
The staff seemed very unhappy and definitely displayed that they don’t care about there job. The dinning area was a mess with me being the only person in the restaurant at the time. I counted two customers in the drive-thu the whole time I ate. During the down time the four staff members just stood there and talked in their language, not even attempting to maintain the dinning area. While i was eating another person walked in and waited for quite some time, while the staff ignored her and just continued to talk. The last eventually got frustrated and walked out.
I would suggest going here only during peak times as I assume the food...
Read moreWhat is wrong with many of the KFC locations in Winnipeg where the recipe has gone down the toilet in the past year or two!?. Of course, KFC is nothing like it was in the 70s no longer fried in Lard, but I expect there to be more breading and a lot more flavour in it, the breading has gotten thinner and thus less crispy and less tasty!!!! I know the recipe and how the colonel taught them to toss the chicken over and over in the flour and spices a VERY specific way…. So I know the local restaurants are no longer double tossing it like the Colonel did!! it’s a very specific way that he tossed the chicken in the spice mixture to get enough coating. And I’ve been very disappointed at all the restaurants where I’m posting this review I hope the management smartens up and trains their employees to how it is supposed to be done that I could still find a couple years ago to get enough breading and flavour on the chicken. Until I hear from management they are going to improve, I’d rather go to Popeyes...
