I had been wanting to try this place since they opened as I had heard good things about their food, the service, and it is very close to where we live. My husband picked up salad rolls for us and a banh mi sandwich (classic).
He said the restaurant was really small but that the people working there were incredible friendly and nice. They gave him a red solo cup of cold tea without a lid, which he somehow got home with him. They also threw in a lollipop and candy, which was assumed was from Halloween 2 nights before.
The salad rolls were flavourful, although the rice paper roll felt a bit thick on one side and a little hard to chew through. It came with a peanut sauce (which I had been craving) and another thin sauce that we assumed was for additional dipping (we didn't try it). We ordered a large for $14 because we weren't sure how many rolls came in the small, and we received 5 or 6 (I don't remember now). Tasty and would order again but they definitely need to provide more peanut sauce. Even eating it sparingly on 3 rolls, we didn't have enough for the rest, which was disappointing as it was very tasty.
My husband really enjoyed the banh mi sandwich and said he would get this again, especially on busy work days. I liked the flavour but found the bun too dry - it sort of flaked apart like sawdust with every bite. There was also a strange grey coloured grainy sauce inside that I wasn't sure what it was and the colour threw me off.
The cold tea in a solo cup with a take-away order was...strange? Neither of us drank this. Perhaps this makes more sense if you are eating in the restaurant and not to drive with.
Overall, we enjoyed the experience and will go back to try other dishes. It is nice to see a vegetarian restaurant open in...
Read moreHow lucky are we? I move into the north end and 3 months later as does a vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant! On this visit I brought home spring rolls vermicelli and Sichuan tofu. There is room for dine in but only for about 10 people. The Sichuan tofu was nice and spicy as advertised. Too spicy for my partner 🥵, but it had a nice tomato flavour and tingly Sichuan peppercorns. I would have liked some veggies included with the tofu and little faux sausage nuggets for variety, but I know the Mapo tofu upon which this dish must be based doesn’t typically have em. The large spring roll vermicelli came with 10 of the most delicious umami bombs (spring rolls). They have nori seaweed under the wrapper. Mmmm. And in the middle is a delicious meaty, dare I say bean mixture? Typically at non veg Vietnamese places vermicelli bowls are served with a hoisin based sauce but here they have a vegan fish sauce. So it’s nice to get the more traditional presentation! The owner and her family (I presume) are very charming. On our first visit she was wearing a hat that said, “Why would I want to be normal?” Or something like that. I can...
Read moreI recently discovered Spice Cove Bistro and it was truly an amazing hidden gem. My cousin and I had a hard time deciding what to order because everything sounded so delicious. We shared some spring rolls and received two different kinds, a bahn mi and a Vietnamese curry dish. Everything was so flavourful and exciting. The owner was wonderful and explained to us the regions where our dishes were from within Vietnam as well as the differences in cuisine throughout Vietnam. She was so nice and welcoming. It’s a family run business, everything is made fresh and you can see your meal being prepared. I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone, meat eater or not, there is something delicious for you to try. I would also highly recommend it to anyone vegan or vegetarian because there are so many options. I can not wait to go back and try more...
