Limelight Karaoke Bar @ The Riverside — Restaurant in Winnipeg

The Limelight Karaoke Bar is not bad, but the karaoke experience they attempt to provide is not the best.

The Karaoke bar is located at the bottom of a staircase in a basement style space. Once you reach the bottom of those steps the attendant checking you in will charge you 5 dollars to enter (which is a reasonable price) and a dollar to check in your jacket or coat. This is not optional, they will force you to pay a dollar to check in your jacket, coat, or anything you’d use to stay warm. This rubbed me the wrong way because it felt like it was just a way to fleece customers for a dollar, especially because we’re in Winnipeg and everyone is wearing jackets/coats 9/12 months in a year.

The actual Karaoke experience was very mid. When you go to sign yourself or your friends up, it takes about 30 minutes before your turn comes up, sometimes even more (45mins+). Other people at the bar who showed up earlier than you will sign up for 5 or 6 songs back to back, and you just end up watching other people have fun for an hour waiting for your turn. There definitely could be a better system for signing up and having limits for doing it too often to give others a chance.

The seats were decently comfortable, the drinks are alright (according to my friends) if you care about that kind of thing.

The overall experience was just okay. It’s not the best but not the worst and if you like karaoke you’ll have an alright experience here. If you’re a minority who likes being racially profiled, this is your place! From the moment you wait in line to get until you leave, you’ll constantly feel out of place. There will be large rowdy group monopolizing the entire place and the staff would not care. And when you think you’re kinda getting into the vibe and starts having fun, a very drunk white guy will fall onto you and will knock down your table with all of your drinks. And he won’t even say sorry! Buuut his friend will offer to replace the drinks that splattered all over you and your group and not come back!! SUCH GREAT GUYS. Then when you guys try and regain the vibe, another white guy will go in front of your table, stare at you, then racially profile you. WOOHOO! So much fun...

I love going to limelight!! The bartenders are great, the food is great and the music is so fun!!

The only thing that kind of sucks is when a group puts multiple songs in under different names so the same few people can trick the DJ and sing multiple times in a row or in a short period of time, all the people waiting for songs get upset because the same few people seem to get to sing so much. Ir sucks because I don’t know how they could fix that problem since it’s always a different name put down.

Either way I love coming here to listen to the good and terrible signers having a great time! The crowd is always super encouraging no matter how terrible...
