I have been hanging at Parlour Coffee recently, whenever I have an early morning gig in that neck of the Winnipeg woods. And what a neck it is.
The Exchange District is beautiful and, after a recent trip to Toronto, while sitting peacefully with my Americano facing Main Street with my one shot espresso, I quietly decided that, actually, I prefer Winnipeg.
Parlour is part of that. The staff are warm and friendly - last time the barista and I chatted about how we both hail from West Broadway and had run here in the rain on this particular morning, he with a "Handsome Daughter" T on.
The coffee is wonderful, as is the decor and the other regulars, one a youngish patron who's always lowkey stylishly dressed, a Wpg thing, drawing beautiful little diagrams (pictures?) with focused energy on a stool at the big, street facing front window. We have now exchanged acknowledging quiet smiles a few times - howdy, partner sort of thing. I think the absence of wifi encourages connecting, with self, others, one's passions.
My only mild suggestion for improvement? The servers, all with their lovely energy, could remember to ask whether you're staying or going, as in the case of the former, they will provide you with a lovely little plate, napkin, and, if you want it, a self-serve water you can draw into a tasteful little tumbler.
Bottom line? Hey, while I admittedly am not a coffee aficionado, I have been to a lot of Wpg coffee shops and this is...
Read moreParkour coffee is a little coffee store located right in down town Winnipeg.
It was my first visit, during the week lunch hour, it was quite busy but very cozy and stylish atmosphere.
I ordered a cappuccino. It was delicious and beautiful. I personally prefer very dark roasted espresso, this one, id say medium roast, however it was not too sour and perfect with milk.
For the food menu, I ordered a toast with jam and a donut with chocolate, dates and walnuts. The toast was served on white light sourdough bread, lightly toasted, with a lot of ricotta cheese and strawberry jam on top. I am not quite sure but I heard they partner up with local bakery and get their bread and jam from there? Anyway, it was 100% delicious and totally made my day.
The donut was ok, not my type. It was dense and the walnuts smelled pretty stale so that smell was over powering the chocolate.
They also have coffee beans and tea leaves, some merch such as coffee cups and bags, and some honey to take home.
Their concept is to have real human to human communication at this cafe, which means they do not have wifi. Which I totally understand and I do not appreciate those people playing with their phone when I’m talking to them. However I’m often a solo cafe person so I would not mind having wifi...anyway, it is not the type of cafe that you want to come and open up your computer and do some work.
Service is very friendly and overall I really liked...
Read moreI have gone to this cafe every once and a while over the past few years and have had a fantastic experience every single time.
They offer a wide variety of beans that are distinct from other cafes in winnipeg. They also have a couple pieces of coffee equipment (notably: aeropress) available for retail.
They are located conveniently on Main near a bus stop which makes it easy to get to without a vehicle. There's a nice sitting area inside as well as a bench outside as well.
The only downside is that they only offer one type of drip and one type of espresso at a time, while other specialty cafes in Winnipeg tend to offer a second choice. This is not a big downside however as their "house" blend for espresso and their drip coffee are quite good compared to other house blends that tend to lean more into a second wave flavourful profile (I.e darker roast, strong bitterness with little or no sweetness/acidity).
Would...
