We recently celebrated my daughter's wedding on 05.20.2017. We planned and organized all the details from ANOTHER country! The historic Churchill room with stained glass, high ceilings and chandeliers was opulent. We had our own private (newly remodelled bathroom off the ballroom, which was only available to our celebration). Our chef prepared a meal that my guests are still talking about. Imagine the staff picking up plates after dinner that were empty! Cream of broccoli and asiago cheese soup! California salad with fresh berries with 2 dressings. Our main course was hot, flavorful, and I could see the care in the plating of the food and it's presentation. The dessert was an individual tiny round cheesecake which was beautifully garnished with it's delightfully drizzled syrup and berries, satisfying and light. It looked like a tiny celebration and it was so memorable that very few of our guests requested a slice of our wedding cake!!!!! (which was a vanilla buttercream cake with raspberry filling). As to the staff, Grace was completely knowledgeable, attentive and a clever source for solutions. She is thorough, detail oriented and executes everything with ease and expertise. Frank, the manager also frequently touched base with us throughout the day before, when we were pleasantly surprised to find our room fully set, and decorated just the way we requested...from 700 miles away! At one point, I decided that I had ordered a dancefloor that was too small. I went for a short break, and within the HOUR, Frank had them return. Done! Grace confirmed a split second later by text, that it was taken care of! There was a pride and mutually pleasant interaction amongst the staff. It seemed that no request was too small. Frank even magically found some safety pins for me! Serving staff served the head table simultaneously with each course. Our little people were served crackers and cheese personally, as my guests had hors d'ouvres...and were each given a lovely pink "fancy drink". All of this, of course was thoughtful and over and above what we had requested. Frank took the time to escort our Newlyweds to a lovely location in the hotel for a quick special photo. There was a large wedding celebration that same evening and being the smaller wedding of 70 people, I can say that we were attended to equally as thoroughly! A quick thumbs up from across the room to Grace as she peaked in frequently to check on things throughout the evening was so very nice, as I am certain she was busy. And now, I will describe the serving staff. Being the mother of the bride, I could see that everyone had been approached with an appetizer, often. Staff is lovely, and knew where every vegan, meatless or children's plate was located because they checked ahead of time. Each table was served together. Noone was sitting waiting for their dinner while other guests watched at the same table. They were careful, and respectful when clearing items from tables. We had "poppers" for each guest which created a lot of paper trash. I watched the staff quickly pick up the waste with no complaints. They served second coffee and the moment speeches began, they disappeared. The hotel employs a very capable and efficient security team in the foyer and they were personable and professional to everyone. We had called numerous venues when planning the wedding. Another historical hotel in the area was prohibitive by cost and I must say, that we were able stay well within our budget. I feel that there was tremendous value in what we had spent and the cost was well below what we had recieved in 6 other estimates with LESS options. We added hors d'ouvres and a late evening cold cut/cheese, pickles veggie table and STILL came in lower in cost than the other venues. Stayed in the hotel 2 nights, different floors and it was clean white linens and was quiet and charming! The room prices are fantastic. The Marlborough Hotel and staff is an unexpected JEWEL in my hometown of Winnipeg. I would recommend a wedding here...
Read moreWorst hotel visit of either of our lives. We checked in with a homeless person asking for money outside the front door. The hotel has been subsumed by a deteriorating neighborhood of crime, drugs and homelessness. Can't blame the owner for this but then we got inside. Graveyard clerk has a dishevelled homeless haircut and mumbles under his breath instead of speaking clearly. Elevators are ratty and dingy. Checked into our room to find out the hotel has no functioning air conditioning. Staff is shy about sharing how long it has been out. Desk clerk mumbled something about it being worked on giving the misleading impression it might be fixed anytime soon. On our last night there, another clerk shared it hasn't worked since she started working at the hotel, however long that might be. Spent three nights sleeping in a furnace, in spite of the electric fan provided for our room. Suffocatingly uncomfortable. Also there is no cold water to control the temperature of the shower. Partner scalded herself. When we inquired, staff informed us casually that one has to run the bath tub water for 5-7 minutes for comfortable termperature! Even using that strategy, we didn't get much relief. Hallway walls and carpeting are reasonably clean but grim, like a prison. Checking in, one of the two elevators was down, and our room had exactly one full size towel, had to wait for more to be deiivered to our door twice as they can't be bothered having them at the front desk, clerk tried to satisfy my need by handing me one miniature hand towel. Electronic door keys were not working reliably and they were still hit and miss when supposedly fixed. On our first full day, a seedy dude in a hoodie covering his face knocked on our door with a bag in his hand, quickly apologized hed the wrong room and left. Told security downstairs and they thankfully shared they had already told him to leave. Some of the regular clientele here are clearly marginal types, so the hotel by necessity has ever present security on site. Twice the tenant in the next room could be heard jostling the go between door connecting to our room, can only hope their motives were innocent. This is a historic hotel in Winnipeg, 110 years old and has been written about locally for its place in the city's growth, founding by European immigrant owners. Whoever the owner is today, he/she has given up, doesn't give a damn but continues to take people's money. Feel sorry for the staff as they aren't to blame but have to take the brunt of inevitable customers complaints. Before I forget, I twice saw roaches climbing out of the ice machine. Avoid this hell hole like the plague. My partner was reluctant to be left alone whenever I had to get ice or go to the front desk. How much longer can a hotel last like this, unless as a go to place...
Read moreWould give it a 3.5 stars. Experience was good for what I was doing in Winnipeg.
Arrived at the hotel a bit earlier (11 am and check in was 3pm) and was told to come back in the afternoon. Understandable but figured I would check anyway just to drop my bag off (only came with a backpack).
Came back around 1 pm and the room was ready. Going up the elevators are a little funky in terms of having to hold the button or pressing multiple times and the doors close quickly. When I say quickly I mean you have to fart into them because the doors start to close right away. The hotel hallways and the hotel inside looks like something out of the shining. Nothing to bad but nothing special.
The room was big and nice. The bathroom was a normal size for a hotel room. Everything was clean and good to go.
Went for breakfast the next morning to, again, a dining hall that looked like something from the shining. Food was okay, again nothing bad but nothing special.
I was out most of the time while I was staying in Winnipeg as I was there for a jets game which I have to say the location of the hotel relevant to the MTS center was perfect. Less than a five minute walk.
I read a few reviews before booking and people were saying it’s a bad area or sketchy but it’s fine. A few of the local patrons out having a smoke in front but no one was rude or aggressive.
The only thing I really didn’t like was the wifi cost 2 bucks a day extra and you couldn’t add it to your bill. I was told I had to come down to the front desk and pay for it then.
I was overall satisfied with the hotel as I was only there for two nights for a jets game. It really depends how long you are staying and the deals you look at in the area. The next cheapest priced hotel room within a 15 minute walk to the MTS center was probably 40-50 dollars more per night when I looked.
Location: 5 stars Area: 4 stars Hotel atmosphere: 3 stars Staff: 3.5-4 stars Hospitality: 3 stars Price: 5 stars Jets game:6 stars
The biggest reason I chose was location and price. If I were to come back to Winnipeg, aside from finding the best deal, I’d probably book again at...
