Almost wanna gatekeep this place because their gamjatang is a hidden gem. They only have limited stock a day, so once it's gone, it's gone.
We love our gamjatang. I have eaten it in several establishments in Koreatown in Los Angeles, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal, and even in Rhode Island lmao. The gamjatang here is the closest you'll get to the ones in LA or Toronto. Over the years we have tried every gamjatang in Winnipeg, this is our pick. I know Kimbaek and Hong Ddu Kae are the favourites for gamjatang, but I think if you went here and tried the gamjatang, you will change your mind. Other places are more brothy and watered down in our opinion. Sushi One's gamjatang is THICK like a stew because they use actual crushed perilla seeds in the broth which thickens it up and gives it a complex nutty flavour. Perilla seeds are expensive and not a lot of places use it because of the cost. The meat is fall-off-the-bone tender. You can ask for extra spicy. Every person who loves gamjatang I have taken to this restaurant and they are hooked and don't go anywhere else now.
We tried other foods here. The sushi is okay, it is good but we prefer other places, as the price is a bit high for the portion size. This review is not really going to account for the sushi, we are basing it off the Korean food, and the Korean food is a solid 10. We tried the jokbal (pork hock), bulgogi, seolleongtang (beef soup), soon dubu jjigae (soft tofu stew), and Hye Dup Bap (Korean sashimi bowl with gochuchang and fresh salad greens). All are really good, but the gamjatang is the star. The Korean food is incredible value as you get side dishes, rice, and even miso soup + salad + oranges with your meal. I believe you get the soup and salad with orange if you order other foods, like the bento box which is also quite a good value for lunch.
The restaurant is small with limited seating so not ideal for a huge party. It is a family owned restaurant so it has a dive-like feel, it is not the fanciest atmosphere. The restrooms are clean. Service is great and attentive.
It is worth the drive to basically the furthest point of St. James, this is near the perimeter to Assiniboia Downs. People I know who live on the other end of the city drive all the way here just for the Korean food. Most people who dine here are Asian, if that matters to anyone. As a St. James resident, I can tell you that good Asian restaurants in this part of the city are few. We are lucky to have this place in our part...
Read moreI have never eaten salmon maki where the salmon is cut into thin slices and rolled up into a scroll. Look two pieces barely had any fish. How can the chef be this DISHONEST? Have a heart man. Customers pay big bucks for quality not low grade salmon scraps rolled up randomly and serve.
The salmon nigiri is cut at the wrong angle. Sushi chef needs to be retrained. I would never recommend this place to my friends. Google salmon maki yourself and compare it with this. You will see how they over charged and ripped me off. Also I have not seen tuna nigiri brown in colour with brown dots.
Tuna nigiri is always red. What on earth are they serving here? Why is my tuna maki white? Tuna maki is always supposed to be red as well.
Also most sushi shops categorize "combo" meaning it includes soup and salad for 17.99. This restaurant categorized it as combo, charged 17.99 and no sides included. Not impressed.
In general: this whole order is a huge disappointmentand I regret spending my money for it. The meal was over charged, gave low grade fish, gave me stomach ache and did not satisfy my craving. Watch out! They should make it a strict korean reataurant and exclude the sushi part as they 100% need more training and not to rip off their clients!! You serve bad quality food you lose customer. You...
Read moreI usually don't waste my time. But I do not think I have ever encountered a restaurant that treated their customers terribly. I ordered takeout 4 rolls in total. I had to go back as what I received was not what I had ordered. The owner was so mad I came to the restaurant (still in my pjs had no plans on leaving my house.) Hense take out. But I just spent 49$ lol only to get the wrong order. The owner went on to tell me it's Uber eats problem... I'm thinking Uber eats didn't come in here and make this meal. Lol!! I was just stunned at the owners handling of this. So I asked nicely for my spicy mayo that I ordered and paid for already. The owner got really mad and gave me the spicy mayo while saying she "charges for this." Lol I'm thinking I had to drive here to get it lol. I'm all about supporting local but I wouldn't support this place. I still ate what I got as it was not Uber eats problem it was made wrong. Lol I had a good laugh. People are so ignorant these days. I was nice but honestly in this economy support places who will actually listen and not get mad that a customer has to come and get what they paid for. I was nice and "understanding" But I would go find a new place that could use the business over this...
