My first encounter with Wayback Burgers was by pure chance as I saw that the St. James location had put up a Kijiji ad to recruit people which included a sample image of their food. It looked tasty so I punched in the name here on Google Maps and saw that there was also this location in Fort Richmond, which for me is much easier to get to and from on just one BLUE ride even though I don't frequent the area otherwise. Both times I've been so far my presence was immediately acknowledged by the staff which is a nice touch. I quite like the way the inside's designed, there's a very obvious indicator on the railings stating where the ordering line goes. You can see right into the kitchen no matter where you are, always cool to take a peek at what's being fired up every now and again or to see how far along your order is. Once you have your order in, it may take a little while to get your food if you're behind a few people, though one of the three house rules (Respect, Be kind!, Appreciate) does say that the burgers are worth the wait, and let me assure you that it's absolutely the truth. The food tastes great, and everything is priced very well and is pretty competitive with some of the major fast food chains. If you choose to eat inside, the workers will happily invite you to find a seat and then they'll bring it out to you. I actually have to admire the extra care taken with takeaway packaging too, items like their fries are wrapped up excellently in paper-based wrapping, so bonus points for doing it sustainably too. By the way, did I mention the staff? It's very obvious that they go above and beyond to ensure that everything is in tip-top shape and that your experience is very enjoyable. After you've finished your meal and left, they're very quick to wipe down the table you were at for the next person. If they happen to notice that one of the three TVs is off, they'll work on switching it back on. Overall I've been very impressed with Wayback Burgers' arrival in Winnipeg. If you haven't been, it's definitely well worth going out of your way to give it a try. I definitely wish them well and hope they expand further in different areas in the city so I can see them on the Wayback that...
Read moreWas just in for some take out. I've driven by a few Wayback locations but always felt like the exterior look made them out to be a fancy, pretentious, new-aged burger place that was trying to reinvent something that didn't need to be reinvented (nuburger). It's not that at all.
I ordered the Classic with standard fries and a vanilla shake. Total with tax $20.46, not a terrible price for freshly made food. The staff were great, made suggestions on sides, a light attempt to upsell.
Milkshake: Real ice cream so that's a huge bonus. I found that every sip had chips of ice in it. Ice throughout suggests that the storage of the ice cream may be allowing too much warm air in.
Burger: A perfect meat/cheese/bun/topping ratio. No single part of the burger dominated the rest which is something that a lot of places fail to get right. The meat was definitely overcooked but did not form any crispy bits, almost like it cooked with too much steam.
Fries: These need work! I threw them away. They were cooked through but had no crispiness, absolutely no salt and tasted like oil. Turn up your oil temp. Served with Sunspun ketchup, no one wants Sunspun ketchup.
Overall there are a few issues that prevent Wayback from being great. When compared to other smaller burger chains (Fatburger, Five Guys), they just don't...
