Every time I visit a new city, I find a local craft brewery to check out. Whether this be Tijuana or Christchurch, Guangzhou or Beijing. This time, it was Slow Boat's turn, and I had mixed reactions.
Arriving, I wanted to order (in English) a flight sampler. Neither were available. I know I live in China and should probably speak more Chinese, but literally every single person in the bar where foreigners. This might be acceptable for Zhengzhou, but Beijing?! And as for a flight, maybe that's too entry-level craft beer protocol or something, but with over 20 beers on tap, that seems like a daunting task if each time you have to drink a full pint or tulip-glass.
Regardless, I settled in, and enjoyed a Horchata Cream Ale as well as the attached Baltic Porter. The food menu is as extensive as the beer offerings (and for some reason, you can order a burger-flight!). I went with some appetizers and wasn't disappointed.
Overall, Slow Boat obviously is on top of their game, but maybe a little more attention paid to detail would go a long way, especially where the bar has been raised in this city with regards to craft...
