The Grandma's — Restaurant in Beijing

Wonderful food and great pricing. Also called "Grandma's home" at the entrance, this restaurant is located on the 6th floor of the apm mall. Expect an hour or more wait on the weekend after 7pm. We arrived around 6pm and it was a 30 minute wait, but we walked around the mall so it was fun. Inside there's mainly male waiters in fedoras which is a pleasant surprise from typical waitresses. The food is really good pricing. Soup dumplings are 16rmb and most dishes are 15-30rmb. Beer is also relatively cheap. We ate at din tai fung which is almost double in price given their dumplings could be better. But Grandma's has a lot of variety. This is a chain so there's other locations you can visit. My only complaint is that this location is very warm inside! I highly recommend the braised pork and streamed egg. The beef is also good. The sweet and spicy shrimp was too saucy for us. The food was mediocre. The staff did not speak any English at all but we managed with the help of translation devices. We were asked to hurry up and order as they were soon closing. But the one thing that annoyed us the most was that as soon as we stood up, before even getting our jackets on and collecting our personal items from the table, about 6 men surrounded us and started clearing up the table. That was completely unnecessary! This resulted in me leaving one of my belongings behind on the table. No one even called me back! They must have seen it! Food was delicious and fantastic value for money. We ordered 6 entrees, rice and dessert and the total was less than 100 CNY.

We were there on a Saturday night and the area out front was chaotic, but we figured out the flow (keep your eyes on the monitors that flash the table numbers). It took about an hour for a table for four.

They have an English menu that looks like a catalog. While we were waiting, we were able to find everything we wanted on the paper order sheet to give to the server. Service was pretty efficient; they brought entrees to the table over the course of about 15 minutes....
