On arrival at the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel in Beijing, we were immediately somewhat unimpressed.
Surely a hotel selling itself as a four star world class hotel would train its staff to greet guests arriving by Taxi from the airport and help them with their baggage rather then watch them struggle through the hotels windows
One member of staff just stood there with his Finger so far up his left nostril, I thought he was in danger of pulling his own brain out!
Check in was ok and we were happy to wait for the availability of the room as to be fair, we arrived at noon whist check in was 3pm
We asked the luggage desk to take care of four of our luggage whilst we went to find somewhere to eat in the hotel but, was given no receipt or ticket even when requested.
Upon return from our lunch at the Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor, our bags were still on the cart and had not been taken to our room.
Neither was any offer made to help carry our luggage to our room but unceremoniously handed back to us.
Side stepping the exact same member of staff we observed with his finger up his nose earlier, this time with his index finger up the other nostril, we found the elevator but then had to quickly figure out how to use it as no apparent instruction how to do so.
To be fair, it wasn’t difficult. Just insert your room card in a slot and press the right button.
Except this elevator had one bank of buttons on one side of the elevator with no room key slot and another the other side which did have a slot.
Not to worry, we worked it out.
The room was at least very nice. Spacious, well equipped and the expected things that a four star hotel should have. The WiFi was good but alas, Facebook impossible to access as indeed the Google search engine and Gmail. Blocked by the Chinese authorities I’m assuming.
The bathroom was well appointed and clean too. Soap, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion as well as facial tissues.
The carpet was reasonably clean, the bed quite soft and nice bedding. A good sized flat screen TV too.
Our room had a good sized writing desk with chair as well, the room had a coffee table and two comfortable side chairs in which to rest in.
The room itself looked out onto a covered atrium or Plaza which was quite pleasant. There was a small bar located in one corner of this area.
My only concern was the lackluster manner of the staff, their disinterested manner as if this was just a job whereby they just came to work for little pay perhaps?
All of the above stated, I would still recommend this hotel but just be aware that its reputation as a four star hotel is tarnished by its...
Read moreWe had a wonderful 3-night stay here. The location is fantastic, right on the corner of Wangfujing St with all its shops, restaurants, and people dancing in the street at night. It is a huge modern purpose-built hotel with stunning atrium in the centre and all the facilities you could want. The main (western) restaurant didn't seem to be open while we were there but we went to the in-house Chinese one which was excellent, and we nearly had the place to ourselves. Room was spacious and modern and well equipped. TV showed only Chinese channels but I gather this is normal for China. Minor quibbles:|The room wanted to stay at a sweltering 24 degrees regardless of the temperature outside. The air conditioning worked well but stops when you take your card out so, for example after returning from breakfast the room had heated up again. I think they recognise this because another electricity card appeared in the slot on day 2 so we could just leave it running (same thing happened in another hotel on our trip).|Getting a drink at the 'bar' was an interesting exercise. Asked for a beer by pointing at the menu and after about 20 minutes the waitress returned saying there wasn't any Heineken, or anything cold at all, but we could have a TsingTao beer with a jug of ice instead. |Breakfast possibly the best buffet breakfast I've ever had. Vast range of things on offer, from fruit, cereals, breads, pastries, continental style, western-style and loads of hot and cold Chinese dishes. And all of it pretty good.|I got the impression the hotel was half-empty while we were there so it might be a different experience entirely when busy, but I had absolutely no complaints and would happily stay there...
Read moreThe hotel is located in busy downtown Beijing. It’s very central to lots of malls and a pedestrian only shopping strip. Lots of restaurants to choose from.||Negatives|Hotel is currently being renovated so noisy during the day. I did not know this as i booked months earlier. However they did inform me a week or so before we arrived.||For some reason they did not let us put room service dining to our room. We had to pay every single time.||We had a do not disturb on our door and at midnight room service rang our door bell while we were sleeping and the order was not for our room.||Room dining was average so its best to go outside for a meal||You have to wear a swimming cap in the pool so you had to buy one or you couldn’t use it. Pool also had cameras everywhere so didn’t feel comfortable having people in a room looking at us while we swam and relaxed. Only used the pool once because of this.||We had noisy neighbours with kids running up and down the floor.||TV only had a couple of news channels in english and movies were only a handful of good ones and the rest D grade movies you never heard of. We had to watch movies over and over again or the depressing news channels.
