Nice food. The food arrives fairly quickly but getting the attention and service of the staff to order food/tea is painfully slow. The problem might be this particular branch though.
I would normally give this experience 3.5 stars out of 5. But I’m giving it only 1 star. Why? There was a man dressed in security guard clothing, sitting outside of the restaurant. Upon arrival an employee of the restaurant welcomed me at the entrance and handed a ticket to the ‘guard’. This ‘guard’ then walked me through the restaurant to my table. All good so far. Immediately after sitting, he then demanded money from me. Clear extortion. I didn’t misread the situation because he quickly became frustrated when I didn’t understand what he was saying - pointing to the cash in his wallet and then pointing to me. I was the only foreigner inside the restaurant and I didn’t observe the guard escorting other Chinese diners into the restaurant. I asked the locals sitting around me and they felt very uncomfortable about the situation, only saying ‘sorry about that’ when they spoke into my translation app. I asked the restaurant staff what happened and they preferred to behave as if nothing happened. And I quote, ‘the man just wanted to make conversation with you’. Really? With a raised voice? And a whole section of the restaurant falling into uncomfortable silence whilst this went on? The guard even sat next to me at the table at one point, continuing to talk over the ladies who were serving me tea and showing me the menu. I don’t blame the waiters for this. But clearly the restaurant is complicit in some way.
Had i not been a 110kg male who knows how to defend myself physically, i would have felt incredibly anxious - such was the verbal aggression that was coming my way from this guard after I refused to give him money. If you are a foreigner, and/or can’t be mistaken for a local, you might want to consider a more tourist friendly branch.
For the record, I’ve been travelling through China for the past 5 weeks. This is the first experience I’ve had like this. Even in the villages of Cangyuan, the tourist bubbles of Lijiang, and the urban mega cities of Chongqing/Shenzen. So clearly this restaurant is a bit of an...
