Weishi Furniture Fangcai — Restaurant in Guangzhou City

Wei Shi Jia 味食家 598, Jiefang North Road, Yuexiu (市越秀区解放北路598号) What a great find! We just had changfen in the morning at a Michelin recommended restaurant in Yuexia. For lunch this was where we decided to go. Unfortunately, it was raining cats and dogs. As soon as there was a let up in the rain we took a cab there, but the rain poured again as we reached our destination at 2+ pm. We barged in but was told the kitchen had just closed for the afternoon. Undeterred we begged and cajoled the owner/manager, pleading that we came from overseas and heading home soon with no other chance to come again. She relented, asked the kitchen head and he agreed. We went for the special qingyuan chicken (白切鸡) and were not disappointed. In fact, it was super with a crunchy skin and excellent meaty taste – most wonderful of all, they serve it with a special sauce (fermented clams), a specialty my father enjoyed over 40 years ago. It is an acquired taste, but it complemented the chicken beautifully. You just can’t find this sauce easily even in Guangzhou. We ordered other dishes as well, including their speciality changfen – this was fantastic; even better than the one we had in the morning.
