Tucked away in San Po Kong’s New Tech Plaza, King Of Soybeans is a humble eatery that delivers big on flavor. Despite its unassuming storefront and compact interior, the restaurant has earned a loyal following—and after my visit, I understand why.
The food is the undeniable star. Their signature 粢飯 (sticky rice rolls) are packed with crispy 油炸鬼 (fried dough), savory meat floss, and pickled vegetables, all wrapped in perfectly textured rice. Each bite strikes a balance between crunch, softness, and umami that instantly won me over. The 鹹豆漿 (savory soy milk) is another standout—warm, comforting, and surprisingly layered with ingredients like dried shrimp, scallions, and crispy bits that elevate it beyond a simple breakfast drink. Even the 小籠包 (soup dumplings) hold their own, bursting with rich broth and tender pork.
However, the dining experience comes with caveats. The seating is tight—tables are crammed close together, and during peak hours, it’s a challenge to find elbow room. The atmosphere is bustling to the point of being chaotic, with staff calling out orders and managing queues in a manner that feels more functional than friendly. Service is fast, but not exactly warm; efficiency seems to take precedence over hospitality.
Still, for those who prioritize taste over ambiance, King Of Soybeans is a gem. The food speaks louder than the clatter of dishes or the narrow aisles. It’s a place where flavors shine, and where a quick, satisfying meal can make up for the lack of comfort. I wouldn’t linger for hours, but I’d return in a heartbeat for another bite of that unforgettable sticky rice roll. In a city full of polished dining spots, this one reminds me that sometimes, the best meals come from the most...
Read moreThe best sticky rice that I have had in Hong Kong. You can tell they are made fresh to order. The size is small though so I had 1.5 stick rice (sharing within the group)
The sweet soy milk and the salty soy milk are both very well done, with a good taste. Very traditional.
The other tofu dishes are ok. But can't really comment much as I am not a fan of the cooking method anyway
Service can be a little confusing if you are not used to sharing a table. But otherwise, things arrive reasonably quickly.
This site is meant to be for the workers in the factory building only. The front door to the restaurant has no signs indicating what is inside. But there are enough people going in and out so you can peek through the door opening if you...
Read moreSo my girlfriend and I were hungry after spending a couple of hours in Bleak House Books (check my review in profile) nearby. This place is located in the cluster of the other Cha Cheng Teng (local Cantonese restaurant) which are strangely exclusive to the employees of the industrial buildings there. We tried our luck with this one, and it was a pleasant experience overall.
We only wanted a light meal so decided to go with the tea menu, and the picture was the crispy toast with meat floss. It's as advertised--crispy and not too sweet. I had the noodles with minced meat (didn't take any picture as I was too hungry) and it's above average as well. Recommended if you are in the area, but not so good you need to travel here...
