新荣记 — Restaurant in Shanghai

This seafood focused Cantonese/Southern style restaurant features dim mood lighting and a modern East meets West decor. All this is a bit ruined by a slightly irritating fish market smell in some corners.

Service standards are quite high and the staff is very attentive to details. With a vigilant host of hosts ready to pounce on any needs. They're quite eager to turn tables and one of the hosts tried to push a dish off claiming it might take too long with a half hour wait time. I have no idea why as the restaurant was quite empty. Perhaps they wished to get the lower classes out before their more prestigious clientelle arrived.

In any case, it was more than a half hour after we were seated that we received any main dish. The seafood fried chicken was well cooked, tender and flavorful. The fried shrimps were slightly old and coated in an interesting cheese sauce concoction which was quite heavy. I thought I detected a slight spoilt taste to the pepper adorning the shrimp. Lobster boiled rice had exquisite layered flavors, with the richness of the soup mellowed by the Chinese herbs and rice. Honeied yams were nothing...

We celebrated our daughters 100 days birthday here with over 20 people. The staff were friendly and offered us with set lunch menu. They offered free decorations in the room when we told them about the event. The food is delicious but the portion is quite small. The service is okay but I wish they could change dirty plates more frequently. Also, I was quite thirsty and couldn't find the server to pour some water for me. This restaurant, Xin Rong Ji, is located inside Shanghai Square at level 5. The foods served here are of good quality and the taste is superb. The service rendered by the waitresses are excellent.
