Varadero — Restaurant in Barranquilla

The food was excellent. I asked the server to recommend a cocktail and I got their Marimonda which is coconut-based and really tasty. I started with their fish ceviche in a yellow chili sauce. It had a nice kick to it, not overwhelming. My entry was fish Encocado, first it was cooked in a Josper Grill which I had never heard of, and then stewed in coconut. Excellent. Came with some veggies and delicious roasted and creamy little potatoes. At first service was very good, attentive, and unrushed. Even though I followed a busload of hungry Germans into the place, I was seated immediately outside. By the way when you read descriptions that call it sprawling, that's absolutely true. When I had finished I was just hanging out and live Cumbia music started. That was a lot of fun. But I never saw my server again. Had anyone paid attention to me, I would have ordered another cocktail and dessert, which would have upped my bill very well. When I finally flagged down the lead hostess and asked I could order dessert, she said no. Kitchen had closed. Too bad. That's why I downgraded the service as much as I did. Hopefully someone will see. To be clear, other service was fine. At the end I literally could have walked out without paying and I think nobody would have noticed. But...

Absolutely horrible experience. Staying at a hotel nearby asked the concierge for a recommendation of the best restaurant in the city and they named Varadero. It was a horrible rainy night and we could not get a taxi. I walked two blocks to the restaurant with an umbrella; however, by the time we arrived l definitely looked like a wet dog. That being said before we evening said good evening the host asked us if we had a reservation. I answered that we were told by the hotel we didn't need one. She told us they were fully committed and it was not possible. She was extraordinarily rude. The restaurant was not even close to half full and it was 9:45 on a Friday. They close at 11. I've eaten at many of the best restaurants in the world and and never believed the reviews I've read in the past similar to this. To confirm my suspicions I immediately called the restaurant requesting a reservation for 10:15 and they were happy to accommodate. Disgusting behavior. I would not eat here for...

Although the food and ambiance were excellent, they have the worst service I've ever experienced.

Most of our small group spoke Spanish, so communication should not have been an issue, yet the server was continuously confused. The only off menu item we ordered was 1 mojito with tequila instead of rum. The server ran back and forth between the table and the bar 3 times to put in the order for that 1 drink.

When we finally received our main entrées, one person in our party was still waiting for his food. The server said it would be out shortly and then disappeared. It wasn't until the rest of us were almost done eating that the server came back and said they didn't have what he ordered and he would have to choose something else. So that person didn't get his food until our plates had been cleared.
