Muri Night Market Rarotonga Night Food Market You all know how I love a good market, and even more so a food market with all kinds of prepared deliciousness. Well, Rarotonga has one and yes we went. It was heaven (as far as food goes) there were many different offerings from curries to garlic shrimp (with veggies served over rice), from pizza to noodles with seafood...and so is goes. Take the bus and ask to be dropped at the Night Market and you can't go wrong. Once there we scoped out the numerous different vendors and made a short list of what we wanted to try. I tried the garlic shrimp and my husband tried the wide noodles with various seafood including octopus and squid. We both ate half and traded to try the other. This is easily done as the portions are huge and well worth the money (approx. $15 per dish). Other notable mentions are the chicken and seafood curries which we did not try yet but smelled fantastic and will be on the menu when we return. Fish and chips also looked fabulous as well as the deep fried spring rolls. Try a chocolate donut or a crepe filled with banana, Bailey's and whipped cream (as we did) for dessert. Most vendors do 'made -to-order' and some do have fresh made available without the wait. Highly recommended and...
Read moreWas looking forward to this night market, we visited on a Thursday but left overall disappointed buy the vendors. It's advertised as open from 5pm to 9pm. So when we arrived for dinner at 7:30pm we were surprised to see many stalls closed up. About 2/3 had lights on and people there. We walked around them all and chose our vendors. But on ordering mine I was told they were closed. No closed sign or menu board taken away. So I had to then choose from another vendor. Fortunately my second choice didn't close on me and we both got food. The food was very good however and for this I gave an extra star. The fruit juices stall tasted great too. As we sat and ate more people and families arived to eat, but were met by all but 3 stalls still serving. But you could see the confusion on their faces why it was all mostly closed 1 to 1 1/2 hours early. My advise is go along and enjoy the food. But go early before the locals shut up...
Read moreWhat a disappointment. This is definitely not the same food experience I had 2 years ago when I last visited. The food choices are now very average, and completely overpriced. I purchased a bbq lamb pack from one vender for $20 with tiny potions of chewy meat drowning in a sea of cheap salad and overcooked rice, a beef chop suey for $28 from another vendor which had the beef portion equivalent of a chicken nugget, but it was tasty, and a cheese cake for $8 from another, which was actually cheap but still tasted funny, and was warm. I've had more cuisine from a uni-student-flat on a budget than this. Go to any one of the amazing local restaurants if you want good food and more 'bang for your buck'. I'm back in November and I won't be doing this again. The biggest indicator should've been the lack of locals eating there. They were probably laughing at a local restaurant with good food, which is where I'll...
