What a great find this place was! We were staying at the W at Playa Conchal and were not enjoying the food there, but we discovered that we could walk to the town of Brasilito along the beach. We found this restaurant and were pleasantly surprised to find good Asian food in Costa Rica. The restaurant is run by a Filipino family, and they know what they're doing. The husband appears to be the primary chef while the wife does front of the house, but I think she helps out in the kitchen as well when needed. We tried the dumplings, lo mein, pad Thai, fried rice, and curry, all of which were done well. When I ordered the pad Thai, the server pointed out that it was "their version," basically warning me that they're not Thai so it may be different than what we expect. I appreciated the warning that it may not be authentic, as it showed to me that they really cared about the food they were putting out. And, regardless of authenticity (still seemed pretty authentic to me), it was really tasty! If we come back to Costa Rica, we would definitely have at least a...
Read moreGreat menu of varies Asian foods: mostly Korean and Filipino with a smattering of others. We started with edamame, Thai summer rolls, and a tempura roll. The Thai Summer rolls are cold, with basic but fresh fillings and a yummy and slightly spicy peanut dipping sauce. The salmon tempura roll was quite good, and the edamame was standard and good- the kids devoured it.
Our entrees were the chicken chop suey and the veggie curry. We asked for the veggie curry spicy and were glad we did- the spice was not overpowering. It was a very creamy coconut curry with not a lot of spice. The chicken chop suey had thin noodles and some nice veggies cooked in with a slightly fishy and tasty savory sauce.
Kids had the veggie ramen which we’d order again, as well as the cheese quesadilla which was well made with a good portion of pico and guac.
Portions were hearty. Diverse menu. Plus they do have a tiny little kids play area which our 5 and 7 year old used a bunch....
Read moreIt was day 7 in Costa Rica. My partner and I are of Chinese descent. Having eaten nothing but tacos, ceviche, pizza, paninis, fried fish, and burgers for the past week (all delicious btw), it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that we were deprived of ASIAN FOOD!!
Korean, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino? Shogun's got most your Asian staples covered. Being run by a Filipino family, some of the dishes have a Filipino twist but they are equally delicious as the originals.
Chef is clearly passionate about his craft as he has actually visited said Asian countries to learn the dishes.
(We HAD to stop by again the very next day before leaving for Arenal)
