Il Vicolo Trattoria — Restaurant in Mata Redonda

One of our favorite meals on our honeymoon so far! Started off with the cocktails - the best Paperplane either of us have had (and I don’t normally like whiskey drinks, I loved this one) and a Grapefruit Americano (great balance between alcohol and grapefruit).

The homemade pasta - wow, exceptional. And cooked to perfect Aldente standards. I got the paperdelle ragu (so good my husband kept sneaking bites) and the carbonara. Also just the right portion sizes where we were full without feeling bloated and nothing felt too heavy.

Ended with tiramisu and it is up there with some of the best tiramisu either of us have had before. Soaked in brandy without being soggy and the perfect moistness between layers.

Incredibly impressed - if you are looking for great Italian food, look no further! If we come back I really want to try the pizza because they have a proper pizza oven in the back and the table next to us got it and it looked so good. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything you order here. Thanks for a meal we will remember for...

Tuvimos una primera visita muy decepcionante en este lugar. Llegamos con muchas expectativas porque conocemos la pizza de la sucursal en Barrio Escalante, que en mi opinión es una de las mejores pizzas que he probado, no solo en Costa Rica sino también comparada con lugares en Italia y otros países. Por eso, nuestra expectativa era alta, y la decepción fue proporcional.

La comida ese día no estuvo a la altura y salimos bastante frustrados. Dejé una reseña negativa en ese momento.

Lo que vino después fue inesperado: el chef se tomó el tiempo de contactarme personalmente, con mucha humildad, respeto y un deseo real de corregir. Nos invitó a volver, no como forma de “cambiar la reseña”, sino porque sinceramente le importaba ofrecer la experiencia que cree que sus clientes merecen.

Hoy volvimos, y fue completamente distinto: platos deliciosos, atención cuidada, un ambiente cálido. Se nota que hay amor y compromiso detrás de este proyecto.

No planeábamos comer postre, pero fue una sugerencia del chef, y cuando escuchamos la descripción, no pudimos negarnos. Y como se puede ver en la foto, no tuvimos paciencia antes de empezar a probarlo.

Me queda también una reflexión personal: tal vez debí escribirle directamente antes de hacer pública la crítica. A veces es justo darle la oportunidad a la otra persona de responder primero.

Gracias por la segunda oportunidad, y por recordarme que los errores pueden enmendarse cuando...

The food at Il Vicolo Trattoria was the best Italian I have had in CR for lunch, and the service from Ronaldo was exceptional in their beautiful restaurant. All flavors were as they should be--savory in the right proportions for the spinach & ricotta homemade ravioli and the perfect low-level sweetness in the pistachio tiramisu. We have a lot of Italian in Boston and this restaurant would quite easily compete with the best of it....
