Here is the scam the waitresses pull at checkout. The IVA is included on the menu prices. It says this at the bottom of the menu. The menu also says, "A 10% service charge is not included," but it is, in fact, added to the invoice, which is typical. That service charge is the included tip. On the bottom of the check, it says, "Tips are highly appreciated," and they highlight it with a pink highlighter. The waitresses usually ask you if you want to "add a tip" and say it's optional. I asked about the 10% service on the invoice, and I was told that was the "government tax," aka the IVA. Well, I am a resident, and I know better. The IVA rate is not 10% it's 13%. Some restaurants bill the IVA and service charges at the end of the invoice after the subtotal, then give a final total. Some restaurants include the IVA with the menu price. Falafel Bar does this, so you will only see the service charge of 10% added. So, just a heads up, as they will certainly collect a 10% tip, then push hard for an additional tip claiming that TIPS ARE APPRECIATED vs. saying ADDITIONAL tips are appreciated. They do mention it's optional, but again, it's deceiving. I understand that waitresses don't earn much, and sometimes I tip over the 10% service charge anyhow, but the deception that they don't get a tip "as is" makes things deceiving. It's definitely a tourist trap for sure. I'd appreciate them saying ANY ADDITIONAL TIPPING WOULD BE APPRECIATED. Let's see if they update their invoice comment regarding TIPPING.

First off I’d read the reviews before we went so I had some idea of what we were getting into here. My wife loved the hummus, salad and pita bread. As others have said it’s really good and she agreed. I had the lamb kebab entree and the ground lamb was.. meh. The rice that came with it was terrible. No idea what it was even supposed to be. The salad was excellent and for a salad.. didn’t think I’d even ever say that. Service here is not good. It’s doubtful anyone will ever check on you so make sure you just try and get a waiter or waitresses attention if you need something. In regards to the tip thing and the “redhead”.. yes there is already a 10% gratuity already pre-added to the bill when you get it to sign. Then she’ll ask you to add more so when I asked here what the tip already on there was she said it “to add altogether then divide up at the end of the night” and the extra tip for just for the waiter we had and seen 2-3 times in total. We left money on the table for him but that is the explanation on the tip thing people keep mentioning. Food is good though on certain items and a nice find in Costa Rica.

Very very nice lamb kibbab sandwich. The bread was homemade melt in your mouth soft and chewey. There was a lovely THICK layer of hummus and finely chopped cabbage and the most incredible green sauce to go with it. Everything was wonderful until I got the bill and realized a tip had already been added and they boldly asked you to leave another. Hey that's fine but when I double check and ask pointing to it if it was an added tip she LIED and said NO.I then asked what it was to which she confessed that yes it was a tip but so small to be shared by all staff. So I rounded it off to A TWENTY DOLLAR SANDWICH which is above US prices!!! And she was still grumbling!!!! It's one thing if they are paid below minimum wage like servers in the states but i was told they're not and believed me i would have left a much bigger tip if I weren't LIED to. Counter to popular belief by the rest of the world were not all RICH.
