El Olivo — Restaurant in Viñales

As a vegetarian in Cuba I must say that this is one of the best, most fair, transparant, healthy and tastiest places i’ve eaten in this country.

Vegetarian spaghetti with eggplant, vegetarian lasagna spinach, lasagna bolognaise, 3x cheesecake (kind of flan) and cabra creme con spinach were great. We even ordered extra cheesecake and pasta to take away. Everything was made from their own farm. We were quite surprised by the creme de cabra (goats cream) because the very kind waiter told us ‘thick goats cheese soup consistency’. It had a very mild taste, almost like bechamel and fantastic with some bread. The two waiters were super friendly, helpful, humoristic and honest about the food. For example: we askes about the cheesecakes size, and he said ‘its very small, i can eat three’. Also the price was very affordable. For all the above we paid 4800cup (30€)! Went for an after dinner dessert and coffee with tempered expectations. This is a small four street village in the middle of farmlands after all.

The bad, the flan tasted like slightly aged cheese, barely any sweetness to it, but perhaps that's the Cuban way, it wasn't for me. Unfortunately the crepe my partner ordered was just out of the fridge, cold, and quite forgettable with a good chocolate sauce on it. My husband and I went here two weeks ago and I was quite impressed with the cheese plate, slightly less so with gratinada. Whilst filling, the latter was not as tasty. The cheese plate was very good with sharp, mild and medium selections and drizzled with a pesto and honey. My husband had croquettes and said they were average. The menu is definitely Mediterranean which is nice change from your traditional Cuban fare. Dinking a star only bc the service was so slow and our food took forever to arrive.
