Welcome to the Ramesseum restaurant and bar, where you can soak in ancient Egyptian history, read the incredible story of the discovery of the Royal Cache, pet the darling animals (the owner loves his pets), drink cold beers and enjoy a nice meal.
Ideally located with fabulous vistas, this establishment is run by a direct descendant of Howard Carter’s water boy, Hussein, who in 1922 had an important role in the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Hussein uncovered the first steps leading down to the royal tomb and in recognition of his contribution, Carter placed one of King Tut’s necklaces on the boy’s neck for a photo shoot.
The owner of the bar is also related to the famous Abd el Rassul family, who in 1881 presented the authorities with the discovery of the Royal Cache, TT 320. Deeply hidden in the Theban mountains, TT 320 contained dozens of mummies belonging to pharaohs, royals and nobles that were moved there and stored to protect them from tomb raiders over 3,000 years ago. Mummies include Tuthmosis III, Seti I, his son and heir Ramses II and many others, which were removed and shipped to Cairo in the 1880s. (and again to Giza in 2021!)
This lovely bar has photos and newspaper articles and a copy of the publication, The Royal cache TT 320: a re-examination. Cairo: Supreme Council of Antiquities Press, 2010. Graefe and...
