📍 Overview & History
Tomoca Coffee was founded in Addis Ababa in 1953, making it one of the oldest commercial coffee roasting enterprises in Ethiopia.
The name “TOMOCA” comes from Italian Torrefazione Moderna Caffé (meaning “modern coffee roasting”).
It started as a coffee roaster and café, and has since expanded to many branches around Addis and beyond.
The brand has become something of a local institution: a place not only for coffee but for experiencing Addis’s coffee culture.
Location & Hours
One of the main branches is located on Wawel Street (Wavel St), Piassa, Addis Ababa.
Typical opening hours: daily from around 06:30 AM to 8:30 PM.
What to Expect
The café has a vintage, “old-school” vibe — you’ll often find the smell of freshly roasted beans as soon as you walk in.
It serves a variety of coffee drinks: espresso-style, macchiatos, etc., as well as bags of roasted beans for purchase.
Many visitors note the strong flavour — e.g., a reviewer said “The coffee was very strong so I recommend going early in the day to start your day right.”
The location is good for a quick stop — many tables are standing tables; the concept is less about lingering for hours, more about a quality cup of...
Read moreDuring my brief visit to Addis Ababa, I had the pleasure of visiting Tomoca, a local coffee shop. Despite my limited time in the city, I found the experience to be quite enjoyable. The staff, though not fluent in English, were friendly and welcoming, and we were able to communicate effectively. The coffee, as anticipated, was excellent, and the overall experience was enhanced by the friendly atmosphere created by the staff. Tomoca also offers coffee beans for purchase, which I highly recommend as a way to bring a taste of Ethiopia back home. If you happen to be in Addis Ababa, I encourage you to visit Tomoca for a delightful...
