Tonight we brought the idea of travelling into practice, which is getting to know new people and cultures. Yesterday we came across Restaurant Angkor Apsara, a very nice looking Japanese-Cambodian restaurant, literally just down the stairs from IBIS Hotel, the hotel where we're staying, and a few minutes from the exit of Avignon's central station, on 44bd Saint-Roch 84000 Avignon. We were welcomed by a couple of really friendly people, but we had already had dinner so we promised to come back tonight. And we were glad we did. They've opened for business only very recently, but due to their location I suspect they will draw crowds. As we arrived there was a documentary playing demurely on a screen at the wall about Angkor Wat. Later realxing music was played. The ambiance is marvellously relaxing, the interior decoration exquisite and classy, the service impeccable, and the food an absolute delight. My wife and I both had Cambodian dishes, which, as the lady of the house explained us, were dishes one does not eat every day. In Cambodia they're only prepared on special occasions. For us it turned out to be just that. A very special occasion, since both our dishes, respectively Cha Kroeung Chicken with natural rice, and Beef LOK LAC, were exquisitely prepared. We combined them with Ramune, a Japanese lemonade and Angkor, a Cambodian beer. My first ever for that matter. It was all in all a supremely pleasurable experience and as such, we've already made up our minds to go back before we leave this place for our next...

I've never had the chance to enjoy Cambodian food, so I opted for a pork and shrimp soup that had delicate flavors and perfectly cooked noodles. We also tried a raw beef salad featuring cucumbers, green beans, bean sprouts, peanuts and mint. Extraordinary. My friend went for a tuna poke bowl that he savored from start to finish. The restaurant is spotless, and nicely decorated with lights and ethnic artwork, creating a comfortable vibe. The food is only outmatched by the fantastic, warm service from the owners, who clearly care about their guests in an...
Read moreI went there twice during my brief stay in Avignon and enjoyed both very much - delicious foods, generous portions, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, very reasonable prices, and run by nice people (I couldn't speak much French at all but they were very accommodating and helpful). I would recommend it to any tourist, even if you're staying within the old city - it's just across the road from a gate and you can have a rather pleasant walk along the wall afterwards, whatever time of the day. And given the diversity of the French nation, aren't authentic Asian cuisines necessarily part of the French...
