Françoise - Famille Melido — Restaurant in Avignon

We visited on a weekday afternoon after several locals recommended this place. We chatted up one of the people who worked there (one of the owners?) in both English and French. She was very friendly and made a number of good recommendations. She was accomodating with respect to allergies. She also went to the back of the kitchen and brought out quiches that had just finished baking so she could cut us fresh pieces.

The food is more home cooking than upscale restaurant (as other reviews suggest) but this is exactly what we were looking for :) Great place to grab some pre-made sandwiches before going on a bike or road trip to smaller french towns. The patio is next to a music conservatory so you can often hear music played as students hone their musical skills. So you can lounge and listen as you eat and drink. I live in Avignon and for me Chez Francoise is the epitome of traditional French establishment. If Chez Francoise were a country I would characterize it as a true social democracy. First, I think it’s THE BEST coffee in Avignon. Second, they make their food fresh everyday for lunch. ALL and I mean ALL is locally sourced. If you are an American looking for breakfast, do NOT bother going here. The omelette was the worst I have ever had. They can only do plain eggs or with mushrooms and they were very overcooked and flavorless. The rest is just carbs and more carbs, and they didn't even give us butter or jam. They did not have a menu, just a board. For service they didn't seem to like us despite us being polite and friendly. And you have to order at a counter.
