We have been in France for some time now and have had the opportunity to dine at various pubs, grills, and restaurants—most of which have been enjoyable experiences. Unfortunately, our visit to this particular establishment was profoundly disappointing.
To begin on a positive note, our waiter was kind, attentive, and made a genuine effort to communicate with us despite the language barrier. We appreciated his patience and helpfulness, and the initial service was prompt and courteous.
However, everything changed once the food arrived. We ordered three burgers, each of which we clearly requested to be cooked medium to well-done—one specifically well-done due to dietary preferences. What we received, however, was far from acceptable. All three burgers were severely undercooked, to the point where the interior was cold, mushy, and visibly raw. Even as someone who typically enjoys medium-rare meats, I found it inedible.
To make matters worse, the accompanying chips were extremely overcooked, rendering them hard and rubbery. We also ordered a carbonara, which was equally disappointing in taste and texture.
After trying to eat the burgers, some only stomaching a single bite from our meals, we decided it was best to stop eating and requested the check. We politely informed our waiter of the issues with the food, particularly the undercooked burgers, but unfortunately, no acknowledgment or offer of compensation was made. We were still charged the full amount—€70.20—for a meal we could not consume.
When it came time to pay, we inadvertently came up €0.20 short, an honest mistake. The person at the bar—possibly the manager—responded with visible annoyance. When we offered a €10 note and asked for change, we were told it was not possible as they supposedly had no change available. It was only after a long of insistence and standing our ground to get changed from the €10 that we were finally given change, though it was clear they had plenty on hand and were simply attempting to pocket the difference.
Overall, this was a truly disappointing and frustrating experience. Despite our polite demeanor throughout, we were met with rudeness and disregard. Given the poor quality of the food and the unprofessional conduct of the management, we felt a partial refund—or at the very least, an apology—was warranted. Unfortunately, we received neither.
I would strongly advise others to avoid this restaurant, as I have never felt so disrespected as a...
Read moreWhenever my wife and I visit Calais we always head to "The Family Pub" (16 yrs and counting). It serves without doubt the best beef bourginon in Calais. Tonight we enjoyed it again. Unfortunately for us the service left a lot to be desired. First server dark hair. Gave us place mats and cutlery. Left and carried on serving other customers when they arrived. Including drinks and complimentary crisps. Then stood around at the bar staring up at the ceiling. After a short while I managed to get her attention to order our drinks and food. The carafe of white wine was slightly cold but not chilled. Food arrived. No basket of bread. Had to ask another member of staff for the basket of bread. Shortly after I asked for some butter. Told they didn't have any. Blonde haired server. A short while later I asked a male server for butter. He happily obliged and brought me some. Later we asked for another carafe of white wine and that was very nicely chilled. This improved the flavour over the first carafe immensely. Despite at least 2 attempts to gather our plates before we had finished eating we eventually accepted the request to remove them. Shortly after we requested the bill. 2 x Beef Bourginon and 2 x carafe of white wine. Total €46 €50 placed on the tray. Tray collected. After waiting more than 10 minutes and watching the server attend to numerous other tasks it became clear we were not getting our change. The Catherine Tate catch phrase springs to mind. It includes "liberty" in the sentence. Called over another male server to ask for our change. It transpires he was the manager. I explained our disappointment with the service etc. He ensured we got our change and nothing more other than an apology and a guarantee that our next experience would be much improved(Fobbed off). That experience will be very soon and I hope he will accept the challenge and provide the service for which we have become accustomed to. Watch this space! Sorry to say the return experience was just as poor as the first one. The...
Read moreThe family pub menu looked amazing and everything sounded delicious but me and my father are picky with our meat so we made it extremely clear that we wanted our burgers well done with 0 pink or red bits, we had even translated it into french so they would most definitely understand and the waiter was lovely and even double checked to make sure he had gotten our order correct.
when our orders came they looked amazing, me and my father cut into our burgers to see them basically still raw and as we do not like meat like that we simply could not eat it. this was extremely disappointing as we made it very clear when didn't want our food like this. my sister as well took a bite into her burger and it was extremely cold so it was very clear to us that the inside of that burger was not cooked and was most definitely raw.
we decided to get the bill which had come to €70.20 and we made it very clear that the burgers were raw but the women who we assumed to be the manager didn't take the chance to look at our meals. nor did the waiter. we were greeted by the manager with rudeness and annoyance when we went to pay for our meals and we realised we were €0.20 short but had no change. my father handed the manager €10 expecting change back but she was hell-bent on having no change to give him. after a while she ended up giving him the change after pleading she wasn't able to which was taken as trying to get a tip even though our meals were raw.
overall would not recommend dining here, the food is horrendous and basically raw and the customer service...
