We were passing through Grenoble on our way to Milan and were looking for a place to have lunch. The menu at La Petite Idee looked nice on the Internet. It was a great decision, since we were in for a real treat. The food at this restaurant was unequivocally superb and delicious. We have been in France for about a week by then, and it has been a challenge to find a well prepared duck breast. It is our favorite dark meat.

This is a moment to talk about our fabulous server, Laura. She went above and beyond to make sure that we had our food cooked exactly as we wanted. Medium rare steak, or duck breast for that matter, is not easy to convey in France. She returned to our table just to make sure that we understood each other, as far as the doneness of the meat goes. She was very helpful in every respect, very courteous and friendly.

Now, about food. We got one of the preset menus for 38 euro, as it contained a choice of appetizer we wanted, foie gras, and the lamb shank we were eyeing, as a bonus one could order dessert of the day, which included a number of selection on the daily board (Formule du midi). Also, we ordered both of the duck breast dishes they offered.

The foie gras was most delicious and most generously served as we had in France. Large, fatty slice (YUM!) accompanied by green salad, unusual, but very fresh and tasty, jam and toasted bread. Wonderful dish.

The lamb was great, tender and juicy. The duck was out of this world. First of all, it was properly cooked medium rare (Thank you Laura!!!) closer to the rare side, the sauces on both dishes were completely different and both delectable. Sauce Romarin, with rich rosemary taste and Sauce Morilles, with actual morel mushrooms; it is very rare to see them served in a restaurant, because they tend to be expensive. Both duck dishes were absolutely delightful, just look at the pictures…. For the side dishes we tried their roasted potatoes and ratatouille, both great.

For desert of the day we chose Café gourmand, which included small portion of their desserts and a lovely café au lait… Overall, it was a most scrumptious culinary experience. As we were leaving, I was compelled to thank the chef and his crew. I wish I could give...

Despite making reservations well in advance, we were unfortunately only offered uncomfortable seating options: either high tables or a cramped spot by the entrance, pressed against a wall in a narrow corner.

We started with the house-made pâté en croûte, which was pretty underwhelming. The filling was hard to distinguish and lacked flavor. The only saving grace was the nicely baked crust. On the other hand, the soupe à l’oignon was a highlight, piping hot and generously topped with melted cheese.

The beef tartare was excellent, and we appreciated being able to mix it ourselves to taste. Unfortunately, the sides didn’t hold up. The “fries” turned out to be potato wedges, more soft than crispy, and the gratin dauphinois was drenched in grease, making it overly heavy.

Desserts were fairly standard. We tried the coupe colonel and the coupe chartreuse. The latter was well-balanced, especially since I asked for the alcohol on the side. My partner’s coupe colonel, however, had way too much vodka, making it intensely strong and causing the lemon sorbet to melt far too quickly.

Overall, it’s a decent spot for French fare. The space is beautiful and the atmosphere lovely, but I wouldn’t return specifically...

This was my first time here and I would DEFINITELY come back here again! The menu has a variety to choose from and is moderately priced. We started out with a red wine and the Belle Idee cocktail. Both were very good. The marinated octopus was simply delicious! I never would have guessed what was in this but the flavors were so well placed. It almost tasted like an Italian Caprise but had strawberries in it. The duck breast was boneless and was the best I’ve EVER had. Very hearty and a good-sized portion. The sauce has rosemary and is very savory tasting. The side dish of grated potatoes were VERY creamy but could have used some seasoning. We added salt and pepper to them and they were fine. The Entrecôte steak has minimal fat on it but was well cooked and very flavorful. The homemade fries were seasoned well a good portion. I ordered a chocolate soufflé was very hot but delicious and fluffy. I highly recommend it. The only reason I gave 4 stars for service is because they were so busy we had to wait for our server a few times. The food was well prepared and very tasty. Claude was our server and was knowledgeable about the menu and gave great service! Definitely worth a visit here if you’re in town!
