Last year on our trip to Marseille we discovered this great restaurant. We booked a table a month in advance since the restaurant was super popular and busy. When we arrived a man who was seated with someone smoking seated us. When we sat down at our table, the table had obviously not been cleaned was sticky and had a long hair on it. The young lady that was seated with the gentleman who seated us, came to our table to give us a 'cocktail' menu. We showed her the hair and she picked it up and threw it over her shoulder. No apologies, no nothing. Gross. The menu consisted of 2 starters because they ran out of one, 4 mains and a few desserts. We decided on ordering a steak tataki as a starter and both beef mains. The beef tataki was tough but since the flavour of the beef and seasoning was good we didn't mention anything to the server on the toughness of the meat. When the mains arrived. the portions were very large and they had no real finess to them. The carrots and beans were crudely cut and the scalloped potatoes tasted like they were microwaved. The beef this time around was even tougher than the first dish. It was completely unedible. We mentioned this to the server and they took our plate and came back with a new one. The new one that they brought back was no better. We couldn't even eat it. It was obviously a terrible cut of beef which they charged us 27 euros for. We asked the server if the chef was the same as last year and they replied no. She had left the restaurant. Not sure what happened to the previous chef but we can confirm that the food and service at Restaurant l'Inattendu is not worth another visit. We were completely unsatisfied and felt completely ripped off. We will...

We went here as a group of around six people. My friend is very allergic to garlic, and asked if the fish had garlic, and the waitress said no. She confirmed several times, and even asked others at the table if they wanted the fish without garlic and then laughed ”why am I asking, there’s no garlic anyway”. Nevertheless, when the food arrived, the vegetables on the side of the fish had a significant amount of garlic. Luckily my friend only ate one green bean until she realised - if she ate the whole dish she would have have to been hospitalised and seriously ill. Even after letting them know, the waiting staff only made excuses, saying it was not garlic (even though it clearly was) and that my friend ) had only asked if the fish itself had garlic (…quite a bad-faith argument, it is implied with an allergy that the question concerns the whole dish). They gave her a dish without garlic, but did not offer a compensation, or a free dessert for example. My friend was sick for three days after due to this error. If you have severe allergies, DO NOT GO HERE!

Otherwise the food was good (even if the prices were ridiculous) so shame to have to give...

Came for dinner around 8pm on Friday with a reservation (recommended esp on weekends, as some guests were turned away). We were seated by an elderly gentleman (the owner/manager?) who was super friendly - he even recognized us when we walked by the next day and waved hello. He asked if we spoke French or English, and offered us English menus when we answered the latter.

Ordered two starters to share - lentil salad with octopus and half cooked tuna. Both were delicious, super flavourful and the octopus was perfectly crisp on the outside and soft in the center. The sauces that came with both were really tasty as well. For our mains, we had the fish of the day (tuna), meat of the day (beef) and bouillabaisse. The fish and meat dishes both came with a delicious and smooth vegetable purée, and I enjoyed the herb emulsion on top of the tuna as well (despite being an olive hater). The bouillabaisse was hearty and the seafood was fresh.

Service was great and their English is quite good, but you’ll just need to flag them down if you need more...

We came here for the bouillabaisse and at €41 per person, I felt this was a good deal for a traditionally presented dish that included four types of fish, some king prawns and mussels. It doesn't look like the quality you might get by paying €80+ for this type of dish, but also as essentially it being a fish soup, I don't think there is the justification of spending so much either - unless you must have the experience. I suspect this restaurant does make their own bouillabaisse in batches and that this is kept ready for customers as needed, this is a usual practice for a restaurant that serves several other dishes and it's not a criticism. The soup was as expected with some depth and the poached fish (John Dory, Monkfish, etc) was not overcook but firm. If you want to try this dish, but don't want to pay over €80 per person, then this is an acceptable solution. The waitress was excellent; friendly with just the right amount of attentiveness. As with all other photos I've seen of this soup, they never do the taste justice!

Authentic Flavors in the Heart of Marseille This small, centrally located French restaurant offers a concise but carefully curated menu, featuring fresh seafood and quality meat dishes. The tuna starter was a standout – perfectly seasoned and a great way to start the meal. The main courses, though not overly generous in portion size, were beautifully balanced and packed with flavor, paired nicely with local wines. The service was attentive, though not particularly remarkable, and the atmosphere felt a bit cold, with only a few other guests during our visit, giving it a slightly touristy vibe. One thing to keep in mind – the Bouillabaisse is priced at 41 euros, which might feel a bit steep, especially given the many other excellent, more reasonably priced dishes on the menu. Overall, a solid choice if you’re looking for well-prepared, authentic flavors in the heart of Marseille.
