La Baie d'Halong — Restaurant in Morlaix

This year was a complete waste of time, money and trust!! We previously visited this restaurant in 2022/2021 prior to going back to Ireland. We always had been blown away by how tasty the food was! Evidently it was on our list again this year!. Wow, restaurant opened its doors at 6.45pm, we were told the kitchen was not starting before 7pm.. So our order would not be taken before that either way. I am French, my Wife is Irish and a French Speaker... The front of the house insisted on handing English menus, which we declined. Throughout our interactions English always came back right up to the point I went to ask to pay in French, I was replied to in English. I ordered "rouleaux pekinois" ... Those came looking exactly like those frozen ones we get in any tesco/iceland/lidl shop... About 1cm diameter and more layers of the filo/brick inside than filling... Which was beyond tasteless. Then I had also asked for chow-mein stir-fried vegetables... To this date I still can't explain the fishy aroma to them. Of course I had also ordered some noodles... Those came over 10mins later after we had to ask for them again... They were just about tepid, dry... When we asked about them to the Owner, who launched into a explanation this was a side dish and was meant to be plain... Later on this was removed from the final bill but yet again the Owner felt the urge to justify the quality of its dish with this tirade "c'est conforme a ce que je sers tous les jours ici" ... unbelievably despite us being obviously disappointed and unhappy the Owner continued to justify their actions. Meanwhile i looked at the tables that were enjoying their food in the original part of the restaurant and yes what i saw was "conforme" to what i remembered we had the chance to enjoy during our previous visits (we were at the newly created space at the back) ... That last obserbation had the penny dropping for me ... combined with the insistence in communicatinflg in English with menus ... i am suspecting this restaurant serves lower quality food for the non-French/English/Irish Guests stepping through its doors. As a French, i have no doubt that if this restaurant was serving the food we had on a daily basis they would not last 6 months! Of course i can not prove this and the restaurant's Owner(s) do know this too well and i regret not having taken pictures ... but i have no doubt. Beyond disappointing does not even start describing the experience. The Owner can argue and respond whatever they want. I do stand by this review and happy to discuss that directly with the Owner if they wish so... however i do...

If you’ve had Asian food in either Asia or the UK, then perhaps this isn’t the place for you. The food isn’t bad per se, but it’s very basic and quite tasteless. Scallops are clearly frozen/imported and the sauces do not taste freshly prepared. It’s really the sort of Chinese food you might try to cook at home, when you don’t really know what you’re doing. It isn’t up to international standards, but is something different from crepes I suppose. In response to the owners comments: I only speak from the perspective of someone who has lived in the UK most of their life and travelled extensively. We are perhaps more fortunate to have access to many more speciality Asian food suppliers (wholesale or retail) than in France and Asian restaurants are more common everywhere, which does appear to be the case in rural Brittany. I’m sure your local customers may enjoy your food, but it doesn’t hold up to...

I am from Orange County, Ca - home to very traditional Asian food from very good chefs. This has met and exceeded my expectations for Asian food in France! This is a hidden gem 💎 and worth the drive! Beautiful and kind staff who are very attentive. Everything was to perfection! I didn’t want to stop eating! The St Jacque scallops in curry and coconut sauce was meting in my mouth!
