There’s one thing I seldom forgive when it comes to F&B service staff and that is rude behaviour and attitude especially towards foreigners. I booked this restaurant a week ago and after having read the reviews, I thought it would be the perfect place to start our holiday in Europe. As we walked in, the lady at the counter wearing spectacles did not even look nor greet us. I tried to speak to her in French, (and my French is quite fluent) & she looked at the other waiter and asks with a frown “Qu’est-ce qu’il parle?” ie. “what’s he saying” without even looking at me. I found this quite offensive. Nevertheless my wife and two Singaporean friends tried to be civil and ignored the behaviour. They gave us menus in French, even though I was the only one who spoke French which then meant I had to translate everything for the others. The restaurant was mainly full of locals and the staff seemed to be a lot more friendlier to them with occasionally stopping at their tables and having conversations. Our table was ignored for a long time. We were going to have a slow long lunch here with several bottles of wine which was initially the plan. But after the first 30 mins, we decided we will cut our lunch short and only order a single dish each with a one bottle of champagne. We decided to skip desserts and coffee. In all fairness, the main dishes were decent especially the chicken breast and the wine list extensive. But that’s no excuse for poor service. Before I left I asked the male waiter “Vous n’aimez pas les étrangers ? (Do you not like foreigners?). He was embarrassed and offered an apology immediately and told me in French that they are very shortstaffed. I respected his genuine answer and decided to forgive him. But I’m not going to forgive the rude lady and in my opinion she should not be working in a restaurant just as anyone who has deep seated prejudice towards other races or nationalities should not. Perhaps the election results of the far right has already impacted some people’s attitude in France. We won’t come back for sure. By the way, if you think this is an unfair review , please have a look at my other reviews. I tried to be as generous...

I rate my experiences at au cul de poule 7/10.

Cozy place with nice service. Food is OK, portion generous, the 20 euros lunch menu with entrée, principal dish and dessert is good value for money.

In detail:

place 8/10: small restaurant clean and cozy, good cutlery and table setting. tables a little bit too close to each other, lacks intimity. 15mins walk from the center.

service 8/10: good service, waiters attentive and pleasant

Food: 6/10. I have eaten twice at this restaurant, first time snail with reduction beef gravy, calf sweetbread with morel (riz de veau), dessert is black forest reinterpreted. the second time is lunch menu, entrée creamy shell macaroni with diced bacon, the dish is duck breast with mushroom. they offer a croque-monsieur with truffle for every guest which is quite nice. However the duck breast was too dry and all their dishes are too salty for my taste, and dessert too sweet... i had to drink water all the time. conclusion the lunch menu is good value for money. if à la carte, I will try other restaurants.

it seems they have a very large wine list but i could not drink on these two occasions so i would rather not comment.

In total 50% food + 25% place + 25%...

Great food, traditional, well presented, done perfectly well. Not the most avant-garde dishes, more on the classical side, but perfectly executed. Really enjoyed steak tartar, sweetbreads were excellent too. Wine list is not too long, but plenty of good gems there both from Champagne and Burgundy with some smaller natural or biodynamic producers to choose from. The place is small but very cute, a neighbourhood gem. Staff are very polite and attentive. Overall, one of the highlights of Reims trip.
