Arriving to Rouen at close to 10pm on a Sunday night, our options were food were rather limited. Following a quick search of the available options, we were tempted by the idea of Moroccan food and so decided to stop by La Rose des Sables.
The restaurant is located on the outskirts of Rouen's old city and by the time we entered there was only one other table dining. Informed the kitchen was closing soon, we opted for a variety of dishes as suggested by the owner. We also had the opportunity to try a Moroccan bottle of wine, a first for me, which delighted with fruity notes and was excellent priced at less than 20 euros.
Our dishes began to appear, starting with a brik and then a variety of tagines, couscous and a few skewers of grilled lamb. Across the board, the dishes tasted freshly made, with homey and comforting combinations. I was a particular fan of a lamb tagine, stewed for enough time that the lamb simply fell apart. An olive and chicken combination was simple, fresh and tangy, and well made couscous was a great pairing.
