LES DOGES — Restaurant in Rouen

TL;DR: we were told to shoosh by the manager, with an aggressive finger in front of her lips. Worst service we have ever encountered (in all of our travels) from the blonde manager/owner.

I’ll preface this review with the fact that I am a travel writer. This means I seldom leave a bad review and instead focus on the best places I’ve visited to encourage others to do the same. It is such a shame that, due to the most woeful service experience we have ever encountered, I am forced to leave this review.

On the evening of the 24th of September 2022, at 7:30pm, my family and I (a group of Australians visiting Rouen) sat down to eat at Les Doges. Our main waitress was incredible and despite us attempting the French pleasantries she spoke VERY good English. It was wonderful to speak with her and she was the most delightful person. The food was just as good. It was unfortunate then that the service of the manager, as we waited for our bill, would ruin the whole experience.

We were just talking, not loudly might I add, when my sisters looked up and saw the manager (who was taking the order of another table) staring at them. She then made a motion for my sister to be quiet with an aggressive finger to her mouth. We were gobsmacked. Regardless of how loud we were or were not (we weren’t even as loud as a table of four French women to the managers right) this kind of treatment is unacceptable. When confronted by myself about the incident she tried to deny it, and then said that shooshing someone, in her culture, wasn’t rude. She was quivering with fear from being confronted. I suggest that she not treat people as second-class citizens if she fears criticism.

I was then, after paying, ushered out of the restaurant so the rest of the customers couldn’t hear me discussing the incident with the manager. She never apologised herself (although the gorgeous waitress apologised on her behalf several times). I am absolutely disgusted and despite loving the meal, would never ever return. We were nothing but friendly and incredibly appreciative (and complimentary) of the delicious meal. I would have left a tip for the waitress but I didn’t want this woman to get any of my money.

Nous n'avons pas eut de cartes, restreints à taguer un QR code, sous prétexte que "nous sommes jeun's" alors que la table de 6 à côté y a eut le droit, j'ai trouvé ça très désagréable. Nous avons commandé une boisson en apéritif, et une pour le plat (qui m'a été difficile de commander puisque la serveuse est partie avant que je puisse lui donner mon choix). Voir la seconde arriver AVANT le plat, pendant l'apéritif, est assez dommage. Si la bannette de pain a été mise instinctivement, ce n'est pas le cas de la caraffe d'eau. S'il est agréable de voir les noms en italien pour les catégories, il est dommage de ne pas les retrouver pour chacun des plats. D'ailleurs, la présence d'une pizza "carbonnade", garnie de crème carbonara, est décevante, tant les deux plats n'ont rien à voir l'un avec l'autre : La carbonnade étant flammande, et la carbonara étant italianne. Ce devrait donc être une pizza carbonaRA. Par ailleurs le pluriel de pizza est pizze, et non ce francisme de "pizzas". Dans la logique de mettre les noms en italien, il est facile d'écrire "caffè" et "tè" qui restent compréhensibles ; c'est un détail mais un détail décevant quand on s'attarde sur la carte. Les détails ont leur importance et reflète le sérieux accordé à la carte. Ceci dit, malgré une carte discutable, la burratta à la truffe est tout juste bonne bien que le carpaccio à la truffe remplace le côté "burrata à la truffe" tant en entrée qu'en plat (elle est disponible dans les deux cas, c'est très positif). Malgré tout en plat, la burratta truffe n'a rien de plus qu'une pauvre burrata supplémentaire, et ce, pour 3e supplémentaires. La pizza végétarienne est également jolie, et correcte . Elle remplit bien l'estomac,ce qui constitue son deuxième avantage avec l'esthétisme, le goût étant équivalent à une mauvaise pizzeria de quartier. Au choix des desserts, quand elle est venue, elle nous a demandé, puis nous a snobé et s'est retourné immédiatement vers la table de 6. Quand cette dernière a donné ses choix, elle est repartie au comptoir sans prendre notre commande, puis est revenue comme une fleur 30s après. D'autant qu'un volte-face aurait suffi.

Les desserts n'étaient pas à la hauteur de notre attente.

L'expérience globale n'a pas été spécialement mauvaise, mais loin d'être spécialement très bonne non plus. Une note sur 20 donnerait un petit 12, en étant généreux, voir un 10 en étant honnête. Je ne recommande pas. Tant qu'à aller à un bon restaurant italien, Pagani est bien meilleur pour un...

Very good food and great service. When I arrived, the hostess led me to a table outside but there was a lot of noise on the street (not the restaurant's fault, the football game was on in a bar down the street and a lot of people were yelling and cheering), so I asked if I could sit inside instead and she promptly accommodated my request without any issues.
