I donât remember why I went into Boulangerie La Feuillette. Maybe I was hungry. Maybe I was lost. Maybe I followed the smell of melted cheese like a cartoon mouse in a trance. What I do remember is stepping through the doors and thinking: âThis is not a boulangerie. This is a carbohydrate cathedral.â
The place is quite cosy and chique at the same time. Roughly 47 different types of bread silently judging you from behind glass displays. I felt underdressed. Iâd come in for a snack and suddenly found myself in a Gatsby party hosted by croissants.
I didnât panic. I locked eyes with the display and there it wasâlike a shining golden artifact from a forgotten civilization: the fougasse steak hachĂ©.
A pizza? A burger? A sandwich that fell into a focaccia and got stuck? I didnât know. I didnât care. I ordered it. And reader... I ate it.
It tastes like rebellion. Like someone took a bakery internship, got bored, and said, âScrew it, weâre putting meat in the bread.â
The dough was pillowy but had that perfect outer chew. Inside, the steak haché sat like royalty, surrounded by melted cheese and Boursin. Might have been magic. Hard to say. Every bite was warm, juicy, and borderline emotional. I made eye contact with a stranger mid-bite. They nodded. They understood.
â Other important facts from my noble quest:
The coffee came fast and strong, like a tiny French slap to the face.
The staff were pleasant and efficientâthink Formula 1 pit crew, but with aprons and more smiles.
The ambiance was 1950s Paris café meets suburban megaplex. A strange but oddly comforting mix. Like your grandma redecorated a Starbucks.
đŹ Any downsides?
Sure. Not everything in the display looked equally fresh. I saw one croissant that looked like it had been through some things. But I forgave itâmaybe it had a rough morning. Also, you could argue the prices are a bit âtourist surprise,â especially if you just came in for a pain au chocolat and leave with a small mortgage worth of pastries. But honestly, Iâd pay again for that fougasse. Twice, even. Maybe with change I find...
