Restaurant @ L'Esplanade — Restaurant in Sarlat-la-Canéda

My husband and I had a three-course dinner at L’Esplanade and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. It is quite pricey, but we felt it was worth the price tag. The experience began by having aperitifs and amuse-bouche on the terrace watching the sunset. The restaurant has an absolutely breathtaking view! The menu can be quite deceiving and can make the dishes seem simple. It is anything but simple and when ordering I would suggest: expect the unexpected. This was a completely wonderful experience. The food was creative and tasty, the service was charming, and the setting is picture perfect. throw in hot air balloons and a perfect sunset and what else is there? Even without the extra's, the cuisine was solid 5. We have been eating around France for 2 weeks and this is near the top. you can try to parse levels of 5s, but anyway you cut it, you will be satisfied here. It's not 200 euro per plate truffle quality, but it is not in that price...

In één woord: schande. Het schijnt dat het restaurant twee jaar geleden een goede prijs-kwaliteitsverhouding had, die tijd is echter voorbij. Eerst het positieve: het uitzicht van het terras is prachtig. Maar daarmee is wel al het positieve gezegd. Het eten is ondermaats, weinig en veel en veel te duur. Ik had als hoofdgerecht de gnocchi met truffel en parmezaan. Een bedrag van 25 euro voor iets wat qua omvang op zijn best een voorafje is. De gnocchi waren niet slecht, maar de kaasmaak van de saus was alles overheersend. De truffel, let wel we zitten hier in een truffelregio, was noch te ruiken noch te proeven. Het is onmogelijk dat het restaurant niet weet dat ze hier de gast een klein, duur en slecht bord eten serveren. Dat we geen menu afnamen, leek ook niet te worden gewaardeerd. Het gaf ons het gevoel dat we niet echt welkom waren. De kwaliteit en sfeer zijn uitingen van een gebrek aan respect voor de gast, geen ‘ongelukje’.
