Stopped by for lunch after exploring the Château de Chantilly. The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the château, and since I visited on a Monday morning, it wasn’t crowded at all. The servers were kind and provided an English menu. I ordered an appetizer—a squash purée with an egg—and, of course, the famous Chantilly cream dessert, which was my main reason for visiting Chantilly. The food was quite good, though the Chantilly cream itself didn’t feel particularly special—but that’s just a personal impression. Since the restaurant is in the château, I imagine it’s a renovated space that was once part of the grand estate. It’s a great spot to take a break, rest your legs, and grab a meal after walking around the château. Would recommend it to anyone visiting!

Food wise, the entree and mains were just alright but the dessert especially the Chantilly cream was amazing. The service was extremely slow. It took them such a long time to take our orders and then a very long time to deliver our food. There was an option to pay the bill via a QR code but given the shoddy network service (only 3G due to the thick walls), that’s not even possible to do. While the architecture of the dining hall is very interesting, it was also very loud. Some of the tables are really close to each other so everyone is going to hear everything.

The overall style of the restaurant complements the castle beautifully, and the atmosphere is quite pleasant. The staff were also friendly. However, when it comes to the food, it was really disappointing. The set menu is priced at €30 per person, excluding drinks, which is reasonable, but the presentation and taste—starting from the appetizers to the main course and dessert—were all a letdown. I absolutely do not recommend dining here. Just grab a drink and enjoy the ambiance instead. Hopefully, the quality of the food will improve in the future.

Arrogant and disrespectful behavior.

After an incredible visit to the Château de Chantilly, we walked into La Capitainerie to enjoy a quiet break and try the famous crème Chantilly. There were three completely empty tables available. While we were deciding where to sit, a middle-aged male staff member approached us without a greeting, made impatient gestures, and said: "These tables will be taken in 15 minutes. I have three reservations."

He had just visibly scanned the room, counted the number of free tables silently, and matched that number to us — as if telling us “you don’t belong here.” We were a quiet, respectful couple simply looking to sit and order dessert. His tone and body language were rude, dismissive, and clearly unwelcoming.

It felt less like restaurant management and more like a small power trip by an arrogant employee. This is not acceptable for a café inside such a world-class heritage site.

If the management of La Capitainerie cares about the image they project to international guests, they should take this seriously. No one should be made to feel unwelcome or judged in a public...
