George R — Restaurant in Berlin

Short version:

Worst bar experience I’ve ever had. My evening was completely ruined, because the bar manager was extremely rude and unwelcoming to our group. The drinks I tried were mediocre at best and generally watery. If you want a beer, go to Tirrée, if you want cocktails, try Kowski down the street. I will never come back again and spread the word.

Full story: We had a reservation for a group of twelve to celebrate a birthday at 7 pm on a Friday, which was the opening time of the bar and made us the first guests this evening. At 7:45 pm we were only four people yet, because some were running late. We were sitting outside, occupying one table and blocking another for the rest of the group. The inside seating area was completely empty, because of the nice weather, and almost half of the outside seating was not occupied at that time.

At 7:50 pm the annoyed bar manager approached us, interrupted our conversation and asked is in a very rude and condescending tone if we were planning on ordering drinks at all tonight and if the rest of the group was coming at all. Then he told us that he had already sent customers away because of our group reservation. Since there were enough seats, inside and outside, to accommodate many other people, he blatantly lied to our faces to intimidate us into ordering drinks right away and implied to give away the second table if we didn’t comply.

We told him that we are about to order and assured him the rest of the group was coming very soon. One guest tried to lighten the mood and explained that we were celebrating a birthday. He replied that the actual birthday was two days ago, apparently implying that the celebration was not important since it was not the actual day of the birthday. His behavior was just beyond bizarre, ill-mannered and ill-tempered.

This interaction completely killed the mood for me. Very shortly after his speech the other guests arrived and we ordered drinks until 1 am, so his mood changed in the course of the evening and he started to be (fake) nice to us. Since it was not my party and a change of location was difficult, we stayed and I didn’t tell him off to his face, which I regret massively. I have never met such a rude, disrespectful bar manager in my life. I’m still shocked about his inexplicable behavior.

It’s such a shame we had a horrible experience here, because I know a couple of people who live close-by and I visit a lot, so I definitively would have returned at least to try other drinks and give the bar another chance. Also, the location itself is inviting and the women’s restroom is pretty and clean. But, never in my life will I have an evening ruined in this...

Drinks are great (exceptionally great!) quality, wonderful attention to detail. Seriously, attention to detail in this bar is not just great, but they go the extra mile to make consistently good drinks, every single time. Haven't had a single drink there that wasn't made with care, precision and good ingredients.

They also have a nice selection of beers, home-aged cocktails and other specials. If you just want neat spirits, I can also recommend George R, as they have a solid selection and don't overcharge for high quality neat spirits. (as other bars here sadly do a lot...)

The selection of drinks is notable too, they offer a great variety of drinks, and if you want something outside of their menu, that's usually no problem, all staff are excellent bartenders.

I'm not a big fan of the peanuts or decor with the lamps, a bit bright-ish, but that's the only tiny negative note I could come up with.

again, 10/10, if you're looking for a bar for a date, a bar for great cocktails, a bar to go with friends for a special evening, this is the best place to go to in this part of berlin (and many others).

if you're super introverted and just want to drink your drink with some peace and quiet, this is also great. It's not loud, staff quickly notices and handles humans...

Some reviews focus on how the barkeepers seem to be unfriendly, let me address that part: They do maybe somewhat sometimes seem a bit harsh towards newcomers, beware that this is very, very normal in Berlin. Locations that focus on tourists are different, but this location doesn't focus on who you are, they just make great cocktails. They are friendly at heart and you should give them a try, because their cocktails are great, and the barkeepers are too.
