Zunftwirtschaft — Restaurant in Berlin

I am usually not one to complain about places as long as they serve me some okay food, but this place manages to not even do that. We went here being led on by the plenty of good reviews, but turns out that those reviews were published when they had a different owner. Now, let us dive in deeper into why this restaurant was rated as low as it was.

Armosphere: The atmosphere was very off putting. The restaurant was firstly very empty, and people kept coming out of some room that the restaurant was connected with. But that’s not all, the outside of the restaurant does not even look like a restaurant which made us almost miss it when walking by (which probably would have been better).

Food: The food was subpar, there is not much to add to this part here as the food wasn’t very good.

Service: As a tourist, you probably expect when coming into a restaurant to be greeted and maybe even shown a table (although finding an empty table was not very difficult), but nothing. The man working the bar and who also was the server did not even acknowledge that we had gone into the restaurant. When the ONLY other group in the restaurant told us to just sit down and get a table without asking the waiter, we did. As we sat down, he brought a beer and some food to the other table but again, not even a little welcome to our group (mind you we were 6 people so it wasn’t like we were invisible). After a very long time of waiting, he finally came with the menu and we ordered the food. Here comes the second part of the problem with the service, the server was very rude. Lastly, when one person asked for more water (they just wanted some tap water), he gave us bottled water which costed 1 € per cl, an outrageous price if you ask me.

TLDR; Don’t go here as a tourist, the food is bad, the atmosphere is off-putting and the server...

Had plenty of room to seat us. Asked for a table of 8. Guy tending bar says “nein!” and walks away. Even asked for two tables of 4 and was just ignored. I find this to be an issue in Berlin in general. Rude city with rude attitude towards any foreigners. I’m American and Polish and they dislike both of us equally. Too bad; was looking forward to trying the food which I would bet is pretty good.

EDIT: I appreciate the response provided and reasoning very much, and would have been very happy with that explanation in person when we arrived even if we had to stumble through some communication issues. In fact, when we went down the street to another establishment, we even said if they just had told us we needed a reservation we would have been totally understanding but had 4 hungry children and were in a hurry and this was recommended. Just stopped by a few hours ago. No greeting from the host/waiter. Not a welcoming atmosphere at all. The waiter seemed annoyed we even walked in. My wife who is five months pregnant took a sip of water from a personal bottle and he came over to yell at us. It’s 90 degrees today. At that point after the public flogging we walked out of there. Definitely wouldn’t spend a dime on an atmosphere that felt like tomb.
