Café Goldjunge Nippes — Restaurant in Cologne

Awful service: it takes just one incompetent employee to ruin it.

My wife and I were staying nearby. On a sunny Saturday morning (9 July), we went to the cafe. The very first thing that I said to the seemingly nice lady in the counter was: "Sorry, I don't speak German", and she let us know we could just use English. We ordered two breakfast platters and one coffee with milk. I paid the bill straight away, and then, found two empty sits for us and sat down. The lady who took the order did not say a SINGLE WORD to inform us that there were just 2 empty tables and both were reserved. Had she informed us, we would not have bothered to eat there: the food, after all, turned out to be average, at best. It is only afterward when the persons with the reservation showed up a short while later that the situation got embarrassing for us. The lady requested us to LEAVE our sits, we complied instantaneously. I requested the lady to kindly speed up and give us our food as take-aways, and from her gesture it seemed like she understood. We thought as she could not give us a sitting space and FAILED to clearly inform at the time of ordering that there were no empty tables, she would show some consideration and give us the food qyickly in packets, so that we would not have to stand there longer looking like idiots. However, she was not sensitive enough to understand the situation and the young lad who was cooking looked like he had all day (and from the way he was cracking eggs, it looked like his very first was a summer job ever). As the lady did not bother to inform the cook that she messed up, and there was no table in the cafe for us, and hence, the food would need to be packed; the cook carried on plating our foods. All this made us wait even longer and the gross imcompetence of that lady did not stop at just embarrassing customers: she did not give the milk with the coffee, neither she instructed me where to fetch the milk from; although my order was "coffee with milk" NOT just filter coffee (which costs less than "coffee with milk" by the way). Then, she messed up the eggs while packing those as the cook did not put the food in packets, rather put the food on plates. Now, two simple questions need asking: 1. where in your website does it say that one needs a reservation for a Saturday breakfast in a cafe like yours; and 2. are the emplyees generally this incompetent, or is it that they are selectively incompetent in their conduct toward non-German-speaking, brown...

Ich habe das Café Goldjunge mit meiner Frau sonntags besucht, da wir auf dem Rückweg eines Spaziergangs für zu Hause noch Kuchen mitnehmen wollten.

Das Angebot an Kuchen ist gut, vor allem gibt es hier u. A. auch vegane/glutenfreie Varianten, die alle sehr lecker schmecken. Letztens habe ich zum Beispiel einen richtig leckeren Tiramisu-Kuchen probiert. Da bin ich auch gerne bereit, etwas mehr Geld zu bezahlen. Es lohnt sich für uns immer. Beim letzten Besuch gab es auch Zimtschnecken (wohl nur sonntags), die ich demnächst gerne mal probieren werde.

Hier gibt es aber nicht nur Kuchen, sondern auch div. warme Gerichte und belegte Brote. Laut Aushang klingt die Speisekarte auch sehr lecker und variantenreich. Ebenso gibt es viele Getränke-Varianten, wo sicherlich für jeden etwas dabei ist, egal ob Kalt- oder Warmgetränk.

Den Service "am Tisch" kann ich an sich nicht beurteilen, da wir nicht vor Ort gegessen haben. Die Bedienungen sind nett und freundlich, sodaß ich nichts zu meckern habe. Hatte nur den Eindruck, dass die Personen bei meinem Besuch etwas viel zu tun hatten und/oder unorganisiert wirkten. Kann aber auch nur eine Momentaufnahme gewesen sein. Für den leckeren Kuchen nehme ich auch ein paar Minuten mehr Wartezeit in Kauf.

Das Ambiente hat mich jedoch nicht beeindruckt und lädt mich auch nicht zum Verweilen ein. Die Einrichtung ist karg und wenig gemütlich, ebenso wie die Sitzmöbel. Natürlich muß der vorhandene Platz gut genutzt werden, für meinen Geschmack sind dort allerdings zu viele Tische und Stühle auf dem begrenzten Raum. Bei meinen letzten Besuchen waren die Tische auch gut belegt - was für Qualität spricht. Allerdings war der Geräuschpegel für eine entspannte Atmosphäre sehr hoch. Ebenso war die Luft im Raum "verbraucht" und stickig, da es hier auch sehr warm gewesen ist. Gut, im Winter ist es kalt und es wird geheizt - dennoch würde ich mir wünschen, dass ein besseres Lüftungskonzept umgesetzt werden würde.

Ich mache gerne Werbung für das Café und die angebotenen Speisen. Allerdings werde ich diese auch in Zukunft weiterhin abholen und zu...

The pear and poppy seed Streusel blew me away; I ordered it kind of randomly, but it turned out to be one of the best cakes I have ever eaten. I also had the seasonal roasted almond latte (not pictured), which was great too – slightly crunchy and not too sweet. The atmosphere is busy but still casual and relaxed, and the service is sweet and pretty fast even when the place is full. Next time I'm in Nippes, I will come back to try their...
